LINN COUNTY - Tracy Seaton, 47, of Shellsburg, Iowa pulled in a 79 pound 4 ounce Bighead Carp from the banks of the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids Thursday evening.

Iowa DNR Officer Paul Sleeper verified the fish is a new state record beating out the previous weight of a 76 pound carp caught last year.

Seaton used the bow and arrow fishing technique to catch the fish.

The Bighead carp is an exotic fish from Asia and is considered an invasive species in Iowa.

Dear Ann Landers,

Now just wait a minnow. I almost fell for your advice hook, line, and sinker, but that was just a fluke. Perhaps I'm just old school, and a porgy like me can only give it his bass shot one time before pulling up anchor. I know I'm floundering here, but the whole thing just gives me a whale of a haddock.

Dear Mr. Carping In Kentucky

Sounds like you have succumbed to pier pressure. It's shellfish of you to continue be angling that it is your alewife's fault.

Carp diem and pucker up!

Ann Land-her

Gosh! Did they start out little?

I don't know. They were put in the pond by the previous owner back in the early to mid 80's. The funny thing is they respond to the sound of my mower when I mow around the pond. They seem to know they are going to get a free meal of the grass clippings that are thrown into the water. There are small mouth bass in the pond, too and they follow me waiting for frogs and grasshoppers to jump as I mow along the edges. The big carp's mouth is easily 5" wide, certainly big enough to stick your whole hand inside (you first). As I said, it's startling when you see these big guys swim by. I've owned this property for eight years now and have been seeing them about once a week. I still pause with my jaw on the ground every time I see them.....

Why are there so many invasive fish species from Asia? Why would someone deliberately “poison” our waters like that?

Many years ago I hung out with a guy in Benton harbor Michigan. He would catch carp and slow smoke them. When ever there was a big party he would smoke both carp and lake trout. Two platters the same size and the carp would be gone first.
