RALEIGH, N.C. -- When Joseph Carnevale chopped up three stolen orange and white traffic barrels from a construction site to create a massive sculpture of a roadside monster thumbing a ride, the North Carolina college student said he saw it as a form of street art.

Police just saw vandalism.

They dismantled the 10-foot "barrel monster" and arrested Carnevale. Hundreds of online supporters want the charges dropped and the publicity has turned the history major and part-time construction worker into a local celebrity.

Even the construction company has become a fan, and wants the 21-year-old to create a replica of the figure that led to his arrest on June 10.

lol, no had it held up that sign I would not have been very forgiving.

If you read the article further down it says the owners of the cones is a private construction company hired to do the road repairs and not the state, and they want the charges dropped also.

In fact the owners liked what he did so well they may even offer to pay him to build more of them.

Personally I would have let him go with a warning and not pushed the bad PR a prosecution would generate, but that’s just me.

...has turned the history major and part-time construction worker into a local celebrity."

Probably spent more effort on the sculpture than he ever did working at the construction site if it's the usual 3-to-1 ratio.

He’s an art and history major so the other three guys probably chucked him in the hole with the shovel first.

Eh. Prosecute, convict, stick him with a small fine and some community service, and make him pay restitution to the owner of the barrels. If the construction company wants him to do more statues, they can take his restitution and plow it back into materials for him. He gets to do more “art,” gets off with a small meaningless misdemeanor for stealing the barrels, justice is done and everybody moves on.

Beware what you advocate. Shepherd Fairey was behind a covert nighttime wheatpasting campaign to get the very first “OBAMA = CHANGE” posters up on public property.

And Barack KNEW that was what he was getting when you read his letter to Shepherd.

He doesn’t want to do legit work. He likes to tresspass on “off limits” property and take photos of his pranks.

Ahhhh, now I get....it's all the cops fault. Mean ol' cops thinking this "artist" stole and vandalized someone else's property.

In addition to the theft of the cones, he also endangered people because he removed the cones from and active work site and that can lead to accidents. He should be held responsible

From your free comment I took it to mean that you did not want him held responsible. If you do, I agree and sorry for my misunderstanding

I said I wanted to “Free Traffic Cone Monster!” (the artwork itself)...not the artist.

No offense taken!

what if it doesn’t? What if, what if, what if......

I don't have access to it here at work, but his "street art" photography also includes videos of him in places the shouldn't be. Such as using construction scaffolding as a jungle gym and gymnastic equipment.

Anyone want to wager that if he fell and hurt himself he would sue the construction company?

But yes, Free Barrel Monster!
