It dropped like on a rubber band, a rapid acceleration downwards that started to slow as if against a logrithmic resistance, until it stopped for an instant then sprang back up, slowing the same way at the top. It would pause momentarily at the top, and then start downward again. It also slowly moved around in the sky from side to side from drop to drop as if the starting point was changing slightly. The light was deep red, but not all that bright, and very small. The total length of the drop seemed to be about a few thousand feet, seen from perhaps ten miles away. It was fascinating, actually, a lot of fun to watch and Twilight Zone music would have been perfect. I was laughing because I was utterly mystified by it, but it was 3AM and there was no one to talk to but my frozen telescope (it was winter).
