sorry you didnt care for it

I loved it, and was weaned on the original - I thought Spock (old) was tastefully handled and considered it for what it was - cheap entertainment

You want a story - read moby dick

In a broader sense, this movie shows what we have lost. Look at Flight of the Phoenix. The 1965 film with Jimmy Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Kreuger, Ernest Borgnine, et all, is gripping story-telling. IMHO, this is one of the finest movies ever made..I started to watch the re-make, and quit 10 minutes in..it doesn't even begin to touch the original..(much like the re-make of "Planet of the Apes)..

the man behind the incoherent "Lost," is the man behind this film, and it shows. Just as "Lost" long ago lost any semblance of sanity

OK, you lost me right there. "Lost" is the best show on TV now that "Battlestar Galactica" is over.

Thank you, Pab. You just saved me the $40 I’d have spent on this dog-spew of a movie.

Saw it twice already absolutely LOVED the movie. Great acting, characters, story, action.

I was thinking if there had been no Star Wars, this movie would have been it. It was terrific.

Four Stars all the way.

I just re-watched “Tunes of Glory.” THAT is how a movie should be made.

The new Kirk, having won the day through impossible fighting skill, genius IQ, daring good looks, and sheer force of will, is promoted from Cadet (E-2) to Captain (O-6) and given command of Enterprise. I couldn’t help myself – I burst-out laughing. Abrams – impatient with how the real world works and a child of I Want It Now! – simply discards any sense of reality and ends this story with Kirk in command of Enterprise without having had to bother with inconveniences like advancing through the ranks by proving competence and maturity and receiving the endorsement of his superiors – a process which actually take 21-22 years in the real military. Presto! We have Jimmy Kirk, boy genius, in command. This may seems fine in Abram’s world of Hollywood dementia, but all it did was make the audience at this showing laugh.

It does not matter how much tactical brilliance an officer has -- NO rational military organization put somebody in command of a capital ship with a crew of hundreds and enough firepower to sterilize a planet, unless they have good reason to have absolute confidence in his judgment and maturity.

While interested in what you had to say, the majority of people were jazzed by it to the tune of ~75 million in business. In the end, it’s a movie and movies reviews, like food reviews are subjective. The only reason I won’t see it is that I wont’ give theater’s or studios the exorbitant amount they charge. Besides, I enjoy hitting the pause button on the dvd so I can take a leak or rewind to see how a scene was edited.

It seems like you have a problem with the director and let it affect your watching of the movie. Sorry to hear.

The thing that gets me is that most people weren't even old enough to watch the original series when it premiered. What looks hokey and antiquated today was fascinating 40 years ago.(When I was in high school) No doubt the young nerds of today will love the latest incarnation, but then “Lost” and “Battlestar Galactica” are nerd Nirvana today.

(2) the acting was excellent (give William Shatner credit – why he has been vilified since is a discredit to a very fine actor

He was great in T.J. Hooker, too.

WOW. We must have seen different movies. I thought from the beginning to the end it was fun and entertaining. The characters were spot on.
LOST - brilliant TV.
How sad you can't just have fun at the movies.
I'll go again in a second, love those senior discounts.

Pab: Just to deal with a detail, I don’t think Uhura in the new film was bedding anybody, with the possible exception of Spock. You seem to be confusing her with her green roommate.

Agree with you the new McCoy was spot on.

Agree hard to believe Kirk could be eleveated so quickly, but initially the ship was manned with cadets due to the emergency (another old Star Trek movie gig, I loved that so many were woven in) so the cadets were all assuming bigger roles. Kirk did have years of training, he was a genius, Pike was a mentor, and Kirk essentially saved the world and then some on his own initiative. Still a stretch to be given command of a star ship in one easy step, but this was movie land and they only had 2 hours 6 minutes.

We just saw the movie today, and loved it!
We have loved every Star Trek episode, series, movie, etc.
Guess you have to have the right frame of mind to love all that stuff!

Opening weekend box office exceeded the total gross of the last Star Trek movie, so by that standard, it’s pure gold for the studio.

As for the points - engineering being put in charge of someone who just stepped on the ship, to the point that he’s given the codes and control to eject the power sources for the ship? Just as unbelievable as the rest.

But that’s because it’s a fantasy movie, filled with loads of things we don’t have, like matter transporters, faster than light ships. You might have easily made the complaint that the ships were being built on the surface of Earth, rather than in orbit where the massive space station is.

As for loudness, certainly didn’t have that problem in the theater we went to; I’d strongly suggest talking to the manager next time about the audio level. Kids in the booth tend to turn it way up, rather than following the instructions they’re given.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but it really seems to me that you went into this expecting trash, and found it. Then again, Wolverine came across very much the same to me.

I go to a movie to be entertained. I realize it is all make believe, even the stories based on true events, get to be make believe during a movie. I’m not hung up on the original time line - what is the point - its make believe to begin with.

Anyway, I loved the movie. I was NOT raised on Grand Theft Auto, but part of the joy of science fiction is the fast pace and the fantastic special effects. This movie has those things and the familiar much loved characters.

Disclaimer - I’m a distant cousin to one of the actors so admit I am was proud to see the face and name on the big screen.

Just for general information and/or more information about The Pirate Bay and the BitTorrent files there, you can look at this Wikipedia article on it...

As I said, that’s where the Star Trek “cam-shot” of the recent movie came from.

[for whatever it’s worth..., to know further information about them...]

We’re huge Star Trek fans (original series) and we loved it. I thought it was a good job in casting and I looked at it as a “setting up” of sorts for further prequels to the original series, in order to explain relationships and things that took place during the original series. If you’ve watched J J Abrams LOST, you know he has a way of setting up things, and then slowly bringing them together as time goes on, I think that’s what this movie was about.

MY OWN COUNTER REVIEW

I disagree, I saw the movie and it left a lot of FUN questions to be resolved for sequels...yet it was all very well done, fast paced, and dazzling in its eye candy! It was quite understandable that the canon was to be re-imagined.

Perhaps “old Spock” can go back forward in time and fix his mistake there-bye correcting the timelines and fixing the Federation the way it should have remained, with Pike becoming disfunctional after being zapped with M rays and Kirk taking over after-ward as an older wiser captain...who knows! I won’t mention too many plot spoilers as others might still want to see it. I think the movie clears the way for all sorts of new adventures/fun possibilities with out the clutter of the previous canon while preserving the essence of the original characters and purpose of Star Fleet.

As for the Uhura issue, that might be a good thing, as it saves Kirk from having to worry about Spock having no one to Pom Far with every 7 years..(or having a planet to do it on...oops...spoiler alert!)
