As I understand it, McQueen’s character was added to make the movie more appealing to American audiences. His exploits in the film are largely fictionalized, unlike those of the British prisoners.

"because he was not an officer he was not given the chance to escape himself."

That's an interesting tidbit!

The famous motorcycle jump from the movie was recently re-enacted in Britain. The TimesOnline (UK) has the story and video at the link below. The video also shows the back story on the motorcycle used in the re-enactment.

A bit of trivia from the article: "...the barbed wire was actually little strips of rubber tied around normal wire, made by the cast and crew in their free time."

Great info: the bike was a 650 Triumph Tiger engine set in a Metisse frame.

"As a member of the R.A.F., Donald Pleasence flew sixty missions over Europe in World War II before being shot down and spending 1944-45 in a P.O.W. camp, where he was tortured by sadistic Nazi guards. Undoubtedly, this real life horror helped add to the authinticity of his performances as a P.O.W. in John Sturges' THE GREAT ESCAPE and a tortured kidnapped President of the United States in John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK."
