Meteors burn up about 60 miles (100 km) above the surface of the earth. Most visible meteors are smaller than a grain of sand and completely vaporize high in the atmosphere.

A fireball is caused by meteor about the size of a baseball. Most people will see about one in a lifetime. They are dramatic, but not terribly unusual.

You will probably never see another one. Enjoy it.

Really? I've seen three. Two burned out in flares as they neared the horizon and one passed almost directly overhead.

If you go out durring a shower you can see dozens. I guess that makes you live forever.
