The "we" in your context points to individuals. The use of the term "nation" makes that erroneous. The proper read would be that he's speaking for all Americans, which, of course, is absurd. America was founded as a Christian nation and nothing has happened to change that.

What is worrisome is the roach effect, the ones we do not see or which are quiet. RINOs come to mind. Obama is actualy his liberal appologetico-defensive, not quite as attacking of the religious conservatives as the so called moderate Steeles or Danforths would be.
