Me too it was filmed at Howard Hugh’s old airport in Culver city about a mile from my house we would sit on the bluff and watch the action

They originally shot that scene with him flying his Crop Duster Biplane into the Alien ship.

I guess they figured that would stretch the movie's believability beyond its already epic proportions.
