Cutler going to Bears

By John Clayton

ESPN.com

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.

The Broncos confirmed the move.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back an undisclosed draft choice in a later round.

The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.

The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.

Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.

Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

Orton had no accuracy down the field at all! They won because of defense.

This trade should make every NFL player nervous because, yes, they are JUST commodities. If Jay Cutler wasn’t safe, no one is. That said, I think McDaniels is a blathering idiot who absolutely screwed this up from the get go by insisting they try and get Cassel.

I’m confused - did you misread?

The Chiefs paid one 2nd-round pick for Cassel.
The Bears paid two 1st-round picks plus Orton for Cutler.

I would have been happy with the deal the Chiefs got; I’m happy to let the Bears shell out that much for Cutler.

I’m somewhat hopeful about Sage. I saw him play a few times and (except for one bonehead play) he looked good. Either Sage does well or Chilly gets fired - sounds like win-win to me.

Cutler decided he didn’t trust his new coach and wanted out. He got out, and to a team he idolized as a kid.

All in 2 weeks.

Yep he sure is dumb.

Cutler explicitly stated that he wouldn’t hold out.

I was hoping the little crybaby would get traded to the lions. Let him play in a town where there are limited fans and no money to build a team around him.

Unfortunately, he was traded to Chicago. I still think he will find the city and weather a downgrade from Denver. I just hope he throws as many interceptions in Chicago as he did here.

And Cutler came in at the end of a 9 and 7 season in 2006, went 7 and 9 the next year, and 8 and 8 last year. If he keeps up the good work he's got an equal chance of going 9 and 7 in 2009 or dropping back to 7 and 9. Suddenly 11 and 5 is looking pretty good to me.

For the Chiefs the problem with the Cassel trade isn’t what they got rid of to get him, it’s the cap hit of a franchised QB who isn’t as good as his salary.

The Chiefs are about $40 million under cap so that isn't the problem. But if the Chiefs were to draft a quarterback with their third pick then the cap hit they'd take wouldn't be a whole lot less than what they're paying for Cassel. And Cassel has proven he an win.

They didn’t have to franchise Cassel. They needed to give him a raise but there’s no way he’s dumb enough to think he deserved that kind of money. They needed to sign him so they could trade him, but they didn’t have to use the franchise tag, that was a total poison pill on the team dumb enough to take him.

With the tag Cassel’s salary is 14.65 million. So there goes 1/3 of their cap space to get a QB that’s no good under center and who has no serious weapons to throw to in KC. So now they’ve got 25 million to get some quality receivers for Cassel to throw to AND get a defense that can get off the field so Cassel can actually throw at all.

But for a second round draft choice. We’ll see who’s got the franchise quarterback out of this - Bears, Broncos or Chiefs.

Forget the draft choice. What makes the trade bad is the salary. Cassel is not by any stretch of the imagination a top 5 QB, and he’s making 14.65 million bucks. Tying up vast quantities of salary.

In my book none of them have a franchise QB. Cassel stinks under center and is too expensive. Cutler takes too many chances. And Orton is incapable of big plays.

1) Since when are wins are QB stat? The Broncos had the 2nd-ranked offense by yards last season and didn’t even make the playoffs in a weak division because their defense was horrific.

2) Cassel had Randy Moss. Culpepper looked MVP with Randy Moss and now he barely has a job with the Detroit Lions. Don’t get me wrong - I like Cassel and he’s a smart guy but 11-5 and that weak schedule is why is going rate was low. Plus the Patriots wanted to get rid of him quickly so they could free up cap space for the Free Agency which they did well in picking up Fred Taylor, Joey Galloway, Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden.

3) I don’t see how anyone can defend Cutler. Cutler himself demanded to be traded when his offensive coordinator was fired. They brought in McDaniels. Unsurprisingly, McDaniels ENTERTAINED a trade to bring in a QB that he had succeeded under him during the past year, knows his system and he had known well for several years. But guess what? McDaniels declined. The fact that McDaniels even dared to entertain the trade got Cutler all in a hissy fit. People say that McDaniels handled the situation afterwards poorly. But what did he do wrong? He just defended himself essentially it was the right thing to do to entertain the trade but that he declined and Jay Cutler was his quarterback. Most other QBs would take a hint and just use this as motivation but get even better and impress his new coach. But not Jay Cutler - he just wants to be a spectacle and a crybaby refusing to return calls to the owner and the coach, giving the Broncos no choice.

4) Cutler is good but overrated. He put up impressive numbers in yards and touchdowns but he also was near the top of the league in interceptions giving him a low-80 passer rating. Cutler had a great coach in Shanahan, one of the best offensive lines in the league, two great wide receivers and a decent third WR, a decent TE and Shanahan’s running system which despite having 5-6 RBs injured last year, still netted one of the best YPC in the league. Now Cutler will have a good RB, a good TE, and mediocre offensive lines and WRs.

5) Broncos got a good deal in the end. They’ve been improving their defense in the FA this season and now they shiny new draft picks for this year and next year to keep improving their talent. QB is now a new question but the offensive system is still generally good and both QBs Orton and Simms are still mid-way through their careers.

why on earth would Cassel sign with the patriots if he knows he’s going to be traded under their terms?

if Cassel went on his own, he would still get good money and be able to pick the team that he wants to go on

the franchise tag was necessary if the patriots wanted to get anything out of Cassel. They got a 2nd round pick. If they didn’t franchise tag him, they would’ve got nothing.

Why not? Look how generous the Pats were with other people’s money (franchise tagged him), I’m sure he would have signed for 6 million with the knowledge he would be traded. He wouldn’t have been able to get 14.65 million on the open market.

Understand I’m not saying the Pats did anything wrong for themselves by franchising him, they don’t care much he costs they weren’t going to keep him anyway, they were playing with somebody else’s money. I’m saying the Chiefs were morons for trading for a player making 14.65 million with Cassel’s rather obvious short coming AND their own even more obvious short comings. The Chiefs need a lot more than a big time QB to fix the team, and Cassel is NOT a big time QB. In the salary cap era one of the dumbest things a team can do is over pay for talent, and the Chiefs are seriously overpaying for Cassel.
