At my aunt’s memorial last December, her daughter spoke, and said she and her mother, would sometimes hear a song on the radio and say “hey, that’d be a great song to play at a funeral.” Little did they know how soon one of those songs would be used that way. My aunt liked “I can only imagine” a current and well known song.
“I can only imagine, what it will be like, when I walk by Your side. I can only imagine what my eyes will see, when Your face is before me, I can only imagine. I can only imagine when that day comes, and I find myself standing in The Son. I can only imagine when all I will do, is forever, forever, worship You. I can only imagine.”
That doesn’t include the chorus.
Auntie had no idea she was ill. She just died in her sleep, 63 years old. She adored Jesus and spent most of her adult life seeking to know Him. She wrote for daily worship booklets, and even got published in a book of Christmas remembrances years ago. She contributed the chapter called “Macaroni Christmas” recounting how one cash poor Christmas Eve, she and her daughter went to the kitchen and wrapped up boxes of mac and cheese, and anything else they could find, and put them under the tree. Christmas morning the rest of the family was shocked to see gifts there. As they opened them laughter ensued. “Oh macaroni! Just what I wanted!” “A can of peas! How did you know!” Every Christmas my aunt made a birthday cake for Jesus. She was the sweetest woman. Always made me feel like a special niece. I was her first niece. We still can’t quite believe she is gone. She has a grand daughter that is not yet 2, and her son and daughter in law are expecting their 2nd child in June. At the end of her emails, was always the scripture Psalms 116:12 “How can I repay The Lord for all His goodness to me?”. She had a very rich spiritual life.
