Well, it seems to me to be a huge craft of some kind. It would seem from the description that people are meant to be within it and it is not a traditional land form. The description of the 12 levels and each being of some precious stone always struck me as an entity that would be beautiful to behold, mobile and designed to transport and/or protect an enormous number of people.

Revelation 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the Temple of My God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from My God: and I will write upon him My new name.

21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.

As those that follow Him are the temple of God [1 Corinthians 3:16] and are the bride of Christ then New Jerusalem is...us. We are the holy Jerusalem, that will descend. We are the "precious stones," the "pillars," the "gold and silver."

Now...how we get here I don't know. I see the chariots, horses, clouds, whirlwinds, etc. as being craft used by both forces. Interesting times ahead!
