Nirvana didn't kill hair metal - Guns n' Roses did. With their explosive 1987 debut album, Appetite for Destruction, Guns n' Roses burst out of the Los Angeles glam rock scene and permanently carved a spot in rock history.
This music review places Appetite for Destruction as arguably the best album of the 1980s. From the opening delayed guitar riff of "Welcome to the Jungle" to the incendiary "Paradise City" the the almost 50s flavored ending of "Rocket Queen," the album captures the reality of life on the streets better than any before or since.
Lyrically, the band completely avoided all the traditional trappings of heavy metal. The eccentric but brilliant Axl Rose ensured that there are no Zeppelin-esque Lord of the Rings references, no pseudo-Satanist posturing, not even any of the party-all-the-time silliness of their contemporaries. Instead, there is nothing but a raw dose of five young men living a virtually homeless, penniless existence on the mean streets of LA in the mid-to-late 1980s.

Count me as another who did not like Guns n’ Roses. If I had one favorite album from the 80’s it would be Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder.
My favorite roll down the window and turn it up cruising song, “In the Air Tonight” was on another often played album/casset of mine Face Value by Phil Collins.
And my favorite 80’s music video had to be this one: Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian

There are some who do it mostly for the music (Of course they want to make money as well) and not dumb down their skills (Or over produce their work) for a record producer who has a “special formula”.
My musical tastes range from everything from Mozart to Frank Sinatra to Edith Piaf to Vaya con Dios to GnR to ArchEnemy to... well, you get the idea.

if you really listen to the lyrics of “The Number of the Beast” it tells a story of a man being tempted by satanic rituals.
Maiden is one of the best rock-n-roll bands of all time. Unlike the hair bands of the ‘80’s, Maiden are TRUE musicians. They actually studied music and applied it to their songs.
Steve Harris writes some amazing lyrics, many songs based on historic characters.

this is by far AC/DC’s best album. But the drumbeats are all the same in all of their songs it seems (bass, snare, bass, snare, bass, snare, crash...repeat)
changing your sound to appeal to a larger audience. It happens. I have played Bleach to so called huge Nirvana fans and they didn’t know it was Nirvana. I always joked that MTV could have made GG ALLIN a huge success had they played his videos.
I actually like the Bon Scott AC/DC albums better, but this is the best album with Brian Johnson and released in 1980.
As for the simplicity, it’s kind of their secret to success. Some music critic wrote about one of their albums, simple, same 4 chords over and over, Angus said “I’m insulted, we only use 3 chords”.
I would also rank Prince’s albums from the 80’s better than Guns N’ Roses.

Another good album (and band) from the 80s’ was Teslas’ Psychotic Supper, and The Cults’ Sonic Temple was too much fun..

When they were whining about Napster I was thinking “I just bought the CD Box Set of Metallica. The first time I ever heard Metallica was in an overdubbed cassette tape of Master of Puppets. So that “pirated” record turned me into a real fan and I ended up saving to buy the CD and most from then on out.
So sometimes it takes a little free advertising, even if you think you are too big to need it.
I will give AC/DC credit for giving the best concert EVER with that Back in Black tour. I mean I felt those cannons for days.
