Knowing NC, your federal refund will probably be taxed.

I actively manage what I give the SOBs every month and whittle it down to zero by making an IRA contribution. I shoot for zero back or due. I don’t trust them and do not wish to cede control of my money to them and their incompetent whims. Especially now that they are short and don’t have the money to give it back to me.

As a Charlotte resident with all the taxing authorities aligned against me, I feel pretty powerless. Fortunately I can move to South Carolina (I never thought I’d say that) and improve 3 of the 4 taxing agencies in one fell swoop.

Here is a forum that talks about NC refunds and why things are slow. In a nutshell, NC is taking 4-6 weeks to process returns (even those done via e-file).
