"It bothers me that jays are quite mean, as birds go."

People in this area have always said 'bluejays are mean birds'. Do they rob nests? I truly don't know. I know they will dive at a squirrel on the ground and they let us know one time that there was a snake around as they kept diving at something and after investigation, we found a black snake. So in that sense they were good for us. LOL!

They are still very beautiful and after all, my aunt who loved all birds, said we should feed all birds, even those old black birds that everyone hates. She was the sweetest little lady and would say "they get hungry too." She has been gone several years now. She lived in Florida and I loved to go visit her! Sure miss those wonderful days.

Yes, their meanness ensures their survival in a hostile bird world.

I agree with your aunt. They all get hungry. I don't like those old crows and grackles either, but I guess they are necessary in the overall scheme of things in nature. :-)
