I saw the documentary ‘Shanghai Ghetto’ a few years ago. Before that I had no idea that some Jews had found sanctuary in China.
I doubt the Chinese gov’t will give a hoot about preserving this place though.
architectural conservation is a rather western, specifically a developed, wealthy societal concept.
but even then (you can see this today in every large U.S. city with older historical neighborhoods) you usually have to the tug of war between conservation and new development. one man’s historical architecture is another man’s soot covered crumbling eyesore.
