I think the scientists who still think there billions and billions of civilizations out there are the same people who try to sell global warming.
What they are saying in the article, if you bother to read the article, is that the potential for earth like planets, ie: similar atmosphere's, distance from other similar stars as our own, water, etc etc is likely, which would suggest the chances for life to exist outside of earth would dramatically increase.

Well, I don’t know about billions and billions of civilizations out there, but there are a whole bunch of stars, and a lot of them have planets, and surely a few of those have life...probably more than we can count on both hands. I would imagine that there are a few civilizations out there, just based upon the laws of probability. And It seems logical to me that, because of the inanity of the AGW argument, that maybe those guys and gals might be from one of them and bent upon a take over...... Makes as much sense as AGW.
