Somewhere on this thread, she probably has a method for getting rid of fleas.<<<

True, but I don’t have a clue as to where they are.

My dogs didn’t need a dishwasher, they would clean them where they found them.

Or there was Prince the fine German Shepherd, who was a 3 year old abused dog, when I brought him home.

He was so big, that he stood and all 4 feet and could eat off the table.

Imagine my surprise, the first time I brought him in the house, for he had to be chained, or he ran off. Often taking the chain and pole with him.

I had fixed a nice bowl of chili, lots of cheese and onions on top and went to get bread to go with it.

In one minute, I was back and found my bowl empty.

Later, I learned that he could eat off the table, without lifting a foot.

He was a fine dog to go camping with, one morning in a new mine spot, almost before daylight, I with coffee in hand set out to see what the ore looked like and was finding a few chips, as I followed the miners old path up the mountain.

Prince at my side.

Then all of a sudden he was in front of me and would not allow me to take another step.

If I had taken that step, I would have fallen down a very deep mine shaft, the ore there was so rich, from the few chips that I found, that the miners had taken away every rock and there was no tailings pile to alert me to the fact that here was the huge shaft, several hundred feet deep.

To take Prince camping, I had to pick him up and put him in the pickup, once we got to the stopping point, he was a perfect companion, until time to ride in the truck again.

I think that every car ride in the past, had taken him to new and worse owner.

LOL, the one I got him from, did not want a loving dog, he wanted a guard dog, so he chained him to his travel trailer axle and when he came home from work, Prince had dug this huge hole and the trailer kinda fell in it......

So , it was now my turn.

The Natural Pet - Flea Control (reposted and revised for 2009)
There are many fairly simple and natural ways to eliminate and prevent parasites. Fleas, worms and mites are at the top of the list and can also lead to much worse things. Today I’ll focus on fleas.

** To start any natural flea control, a good bath should come first if at all possible. A gentle child’s soap is fine but follow with a diluted vinegar rinse (a couple of tablespoons vinegar to a gallon of warm water) to remove any residue. Furred creatures have natural occurring oils which they need for a healthy coat and to say cool in summer and warm in winter. A good bath never hurts but to much bathing could actually cause fleas to be worse and weaken the natural system.

** Tea Tree oil can be diluted and used in a rinse after the vinegar rinse or as a stand alone rinse instead of bathing. A Tea Tree oil rinse (1 tablespoon Tea Tree oil per one gallon warm water) can be used like a flea dip in the summer, if fleas and tick are very bad, or before a long hike in the forest. You can also make up a batch and keep it in a spray bottle to lightly mist the coat when it’s warm out (always be careful to avoid the eyes! and don’t over use)

** Diatomaceous Earth (DE) can be used outside with great effect and is fairly safe to use (everything should be used with respect and care). It can be sprinkled along foundations of buildings and in animal pens under a layer of straw or raked into a layer of pebbles. I would not recommend using it indoors because the dust is harmful if breathed but a small amount will likely be tracked in by the pets anyway.

** Cedar has long been used for it’s ability to deter fleas. Cedar chips make an excellent bedding and leaves the coat smelling like cedar as well. Cedar can also be used as a filler for pet beds indoors and in small cedar pillows kept in closets and under furniture.

To make a soft pet bed with a refillable cedar pocket, just sew a pillow whatever size your pet needs and, stuff as usual. But, when you’re ready to close the opening sew a long sock or open weave pouch inside the pillow. That way the stuffing stays in but the pouch can be filled and refilled with cedar chips.

** Garlic can be fed to cats and dogs to help eliminate fleas and keep them at bay. It also has the added benefits of deworming, helping to strengthen the immune system, good for the heart and circulatory systems. However, to much garlic can irritate the stomach lining, to much of anything, no matter how good, usually turns into a bad thing.

I recommend 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder per 10 pounds of body weight, fed at least twice a week.

******* NEVER use garlic salt, it can dangerously thin the blood.

** Brewers Yeast is a great addition for natural flea control. It can be added to wet food or given daily in tablet form. Most dogs and cats love it and gobble it right up. The general recommended dose is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight.

Brewers Yeast can also be rubbed into the coat to repel fleas instantly. This should be done outside to keep the fleas out of your home and be careful they don’t jump on you. This is only a temporary fix but can be used to jump start a natural flea routine.

** Pennyroyal is a good flea deterrent. It can be grown around animal enclosures and dried to use in natural, temporary, flea collars. But, should always be used with caution!

********* Although Pennyroyal is of the mint family it is poisonous if ingested and should never be taken internally. If you’re pregnant or even might be, you shouldn’t handle it at all!

If growing around enclosures be sure to keep it out of the animals reach. Grow it along the outsides of fences or near the backs of houses where the animals can’t get.

For a natural, temporary, flea collar ... take about a teaspoon of dried herb and roll it in a cotton bandana and tie loosely around the neck. You can also add it dried to a removable pouch that can be secured inside a dog bed or the like.

** Borax powder can be used on carpets and floors and is very effective in killing fleas. Sprinkle a good layer on, leave it for at least 1 hour, then vacuum thoroughly. When leaving anything on the carpets or floors remove pets and children to a safe area until properly cleaned.

** Vacuum carpets often and immediately empty the canister or bag and throw outside.

** Wash bedding regularly and thoroughly. Yours and theirs.

Please remember to consult your Vet or animal care provider, before trying anything new :)

Recipes .....

~ Cat Yum ~

2/3 to 1 c wet food (store or homemade)
1 beaten egg
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder (never garlic salt or raw garlic)
1 Tablespoon brewers yeast (or distillers yeast)

very warm water ** but not hot

Mix all ingredients except water and store in airtight container in fridge. When ready to feed, mix 1 teaspoon warm water per Tablespoon of Yum. cats rarely like to eat cold things so the very warm water warms to Yum and most cats love it.

Feed 1 Tablespoons per 10 pounds per day

~ Flea Biscuits ~

2 c flour (whole wheat is best but all purpose is fine too)
1 c cornmeal
2/3 c brewers yeast (or distillers yeast)
2 t garlic powder (never garlic salt or fresh garlic, both are very harmful to dogs)
2 egg yolks
1 1/2 c boiling chicken broth ( I make my own by boiling the leftover chicken bones) (you can also use beef broth)

Put the broth to boil. Mix all the dry ingredients together then add the egg yolks and work in with a heavy spoon. Add the broth to the mix and mix well with heavy spoon. Set aside and allow to cool. When it’s cool enough to handle use a little flour/cornmeal mix to dust hands and form into a large ball. Add more flour/cornmeal if it’s to sticky. Now you can either pinch off pieces and flatten or roll out and cut like biscuits. Any shape will do (bones, circles, stars ...) but they shouldn’t be more then 1/4 inch thick. Bake at 375 for 15 mins then turn and bake 15 mins more. Allow to cool fully and store in an airtight container. Makes about 70 medium biscuits.

I make 2 inch circles, between 1/8 and 1/4 in. thick, and give them for fleas and ticks, 1 cookie for every 50 pounds. You can break them in half for 25 pounds or make smaller biscuits.

It may not seem like enough at first but the garlic and yeast build up and work wonderfully.

**Can be stored on the counter but last longer if stored in the fridge. To make them stay better stored on the counter, leave them out to dry very well for 24 hours or dry in a very low oven with door cracked open for 2 or so hours.

Jalapeno Pepper Jelly

2 cups green or red jalapeno chilies, seeded, rough chopped and liquefied in processor or blender.
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
6 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups cider vinegar
2 pouches liquid pectin
green or red food color

Place chilies, pepper, sugar, and vinegar in a large saucepan. Bring to rolling boil. Boil for five minutes. Remove from heat, add pectin and color. Seal in hot sterilized jars with sterilized lids and rings.

I sterilize my clean jars in the dishwasher on the water heat, and heat dry setting.

If you like it with less heat, remove the ribs as well as seeds and reduce cayenne to 1/2 teaspoon.

So no more effort on my part for tonight, it is too much stress and now I am not breathing.

Maybe we will just go on with this one.

Unusual Chinese vegetable grows in city backyard

My friends have a large, productive, backyard food garden in Richmond, B.C. One
vegetable they grow is most unusual and delicious. At dinner the other night, I
asked my generous hostess to tell me about this Chinese vegetable, which she both
grows and cooks. They call it “Orsun” in Mandarin.

FDA Approves Vaccine for 2009-2010 Seasonal Influenza

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: July 20, 2009

Media Inquiries: Peper Long, 301-796-4671, mary.long@fda.hhs.gov
Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA
FDA Approves Vaccine for 2009-2010 Seasonal Influenza

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it has approved a vaccine for 2009-2010 seasonal influenza in the United States.

The seasonal influenza vaccine will not protect against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus that resulted in the declaration of a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on June 11, 2009. The FDA continues to work with manufacturers, international partners and other government agencies to facilitate the availability of a safe and effective vaccine against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus.

Although this year’s seasonal vaccine is directed against other strains of influenza expected to be circulating and will not provide protection against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, it is still important for those Americans for whom it is recommended to receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. No vaccine is 100 percent effective against preventing disease, but vaccination is the best protection against influenza and can prevent many illnesses and deaths.

“The approval of this year’s seasonal influenza vaccine is an example of the FDA’s important responsibility to assure timely availability of vaccine to help protect the health of the American public,” said Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., commissioner of food and drugs. “A new seasonal influenza vaccine each year is a critical tool in protecting public health.”

The six vaccine brand names and manufacturers are: Afluria, CSL Limited; Fluarix, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals; FluLaval, ID Biomedical Corporation; Fluvirin, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited; Fluzone, Sanofi Pasteur Inc.; and FluMist, MedImmune Vaccines Inc.

Each year, experts from the FDA, WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other institutions study virus samples and patterns collected from around the world in an effort to identify strains that may cause the most illness in the upcoming season.

Based on those forecasts and on the recommendations of the FDA’s Vaccine and Related Products Advisory Committee, the FDA determines the three strains that manufacturers should include in their vaccines for the U.S. population. The closer the match between the circulating strains and the strains in the vaccine, the better the protection against the disease.

The vaccine for the 2009-2010 seasonal influenza contains:

* an A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1)-like virus
* an A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2)-like virus
* a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

There is always a possibility of a less than optimal match between the virus strains predicted to circulate and the virus strains that end up causing the most illness. Even if the vaccine and the circulating strains are not an exact match, the vaccine may reduce the severity of the illness or may help prevent influenza-related complications.

According to the CDC, between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population develops influenza each year. More than 200,000 are hospitalized from its complications and about 36,000 people die. Older people, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for influenza-related complications. Vaccination of these groups is critical.

Additionally, influenza immunization of health care personnel is important in protecting them and others from influenza.

Dräger Initiates a Voluntary Device Recall of Stabilet Contacts Current Users

Contact:
Glenyce Scott-Hoglund
215-660-2310
Glenyce.scott@draeger.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Telford, PA – July 20, 2009 - Draeger Medical Inc. recommends the removal of Stabilet Infant Warmer models 200, 300, 1250, 1500, 200/3000, 2000, 2200/3200, 3000, and 3200 from service and replacing them with alternative warmers as soon as it is feasible.

This action is in response to an event that took place in a neonatal unit of a hospital in Minnesota in 2008. ECRI conducted an investigation of the event and concluded that the likely cause was the Stabilet. Dräger has not been given the opportunity to investigate this incident or to test the Stabilet at issue, and therefore; we cannot comment on ECRI’s investigative conclusions. However, Dräger determined to err on the side of caution and has initiated a voluntary recall. As part of this recall, Dräger agrees with ECRI’s recommendation to remove the Stabilets from service as soon as it is feasible. The recall recommends that the hospital take the following actions:

(1) Hospitals should immediately begin planning to remove the referenced models from service:

1. Hospitals with sufficient number of unaffected models to meet anticipated clinical needs should immediately remove the referenced warmers from service.
2. Hospitals currently unable to provide required heating therapy if these units are removed from service should
1. Begin budgeting for the replacement of the units; and
2. Limit use of the referenced models to patients NOT requiring O2 – enrichment may increase the risk of fire. Hospitals should inform all potential users of this restriction and clearly mark referenced units to reinforce this message.
3. Use a different heating modality (e.g., an infant incubator) if an infant requires O2therapy (whether supplemental or via intubation) and no unaffected warmers are available.

(2) Once removed from service, the warmers should be rendered unusable by removing the heating element and the power cord. These warmers should not be used or sold for any other purpose.

In 2004, Dräger acquired from Hill-Rom Co., Inc. (the manufacturer of this product) the Stabilet product line of radiant infant warmers. Hill-Rom discontinued manufacturing the Stabilet product line in 1998, six years prior to its sale to Dräger. Service support and spare parts for Stabilets were discontinued at the end of 2003. All known users of this product line were informed that this product was discontinued at this time.

If you need further information please contact Mike Kelhart (1-800-543-5047 ext 2349). A recall notification is being sent out to all known current users and is available in the Dräger website at www.draeger.com/Stabilet.

Tips for Older Adults to Combat Heat-Related Illnesses
Risk of Heat-Related Problems Increases with Age

As we age, our ability to adequately respond to summer heat can become a serious problem. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has some advice for helping older people avoid heat-related illnesses, known collectively as hyperthermia, during the summer months.

Hyperthermia can include heat stroke, heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps and heat exhaustion. The risk for hyperthermia is a combination of the outside temperature along with the general health and lifestyle of the individual. Health-related factors that may increase risk include:

* Age-related changes to the skin such as poor blood circulation and inefficient sweat glands
* Heart, lung and kidney diseases, as well as any illness that causes general weakness or fever
* High blood pressure or other conditions that require changes in diet. For example, people on salt-restricted diets may increase their risk. However, salt pills should not be used without first consulting a doctor.
* The inability to perspire, caused by medications such as diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers and certain heart and blood pressure drugs
* Taking several drugs for various conditions. It is important, however, to continue to take prescribed medication and discuss possible problems with a physician.
* Being substantially overweight or underweight
* Drinking alcoholic beverages
* Being dehydrated

Lifestyle factors can also increase risk, including extremely hot living quarters, lack of transportation, overdressing, visiting overcrowded places and not understanding how to respond to weather conditions. Older people, particularly those at special risk, should stay indoors on particularly hot and humid days, especially when there is an air pollution alert in effect. People without fans or air conditioners should go to places such as shopping malls, movie theaters, libraries or cooling centers which are often provided by government agencies, religious groups, and social service organizations in many communities.

Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia that occurs when the body is overwhelmed by heat and unable to control its temperature. Someone with a body temperature above 104 degrees is likely suffering from heat stroke and may have symptoms of confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, faintness, staggering, possible delirium or coma. Seek immediate medical attention for a person with any of these symptoms, especially an older adult.

If you suspect that someone is suffering from a heat-related illness:

* Get the person out of the sun and into an air-conditioned or other cool place.
* Offer fluids such as water, fruit and vegetable juices, but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
* Encourage the individual to shower, bathe or sponge off with cool water.
* Apply a cold, wet cloth to the wrists, neck, armpits, and/or groin, places where blood passes close to the surface and the cold cloths can help cool the blood.
* Urge the person to lie down and rest, preferably in a cool place.

For a free copy of the NIA’s Age Page on hyperthermia in English or in Spanish, contact the NIA Information Center at 1-800-222-2225 or go to http://www.niapublications.org/agepages/hyperther.asp or www.niapublications.org/agepages/hyperther-sp.asp for the Spanish-language version.

Questions & Answers
Novel H1N1 Influenza Vaccine

July 20, 2009 2:15 PM ET

Q. What are the plans for developing novel H1N1 vaccine?

A. Vaccines are the most powerful public health tool for control of influenza, and the U.S. government is working closely with manufacturers to take steps in the process to manufacture a novel H1N1 vaccine. Working together with scientists in the public and private sector, CDC has isolated the new H1N1 virus and modified the virus so that it can be used to make hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine. Vaccine manufacturers are now using these materials to begin vaccine production. Making vaccine is a multi-step process which takes several months to complete. Candidate vaccines will be tested in clinical trials over the few months.

Q. When is it expected that the novel H1N1 vaccine will be available?

A. The novel H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in the fall. More specific dates cannot be provided at this time as vaccine availability depends on several factors including manufacturing time and time needed to conduct clinical trials

Q. Will the seasonal flu vaccine also protect against the novel H1N1 flu?

A. The seasonal flu vaccine is not expected to protect against the novel H1N1 flu.

Q. Can the seasonal vaccine and the novel H1N1 vaccine be given at the same time?

A. Clinical trial results will be necessary to confirm that novel H1N1 and seasonal vaccine will be safe and effective if given at the same time. We expect the seasonal vaccine to be available earlier than the H1N1 vaccine. The usual seasonal influenza viruses are still expected to cause illness this fall and winter. Individuals are encouraged to get their seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it is available.

Q. Who will be recommended as priority groups to receive the novel H1N1 vaccine?

A. Based on what we’re currently seeing with respect to the virus and epidemiologic data, states, communities, and health care providers should begin planning strategies for how they will vaccinate younger people (children and younger adults), pregnant women, healthcare personnel, and people who have underlying health conditions. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and other federal advisory bodies will continue to monitor the virus and review epidemiologic data over the summer. We’ll be looking to the ACIP and other stakeholders, as well as the public, as we move forward in our planning. It is possible that vaccine priority groups will differ from earlier guidance as more data becomes available however it’s very important for planning to continue based on information currently available.

Q. Where will the vaccine be available?

A. Every state is developing a vaccine delivery plan. Vaccine will be available in a combination of settings such as vaccination clinics organized by local health departments, healthcare provider offices, schools, and other private settings, such as pharmacies and workplaces.

Q. Are there other ways to prevent the spread of illness?

A. Take everyday actions to stay healthy.

* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
* Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures. These measures will continue to be important after a novel H1N1 vaccine is available because they can prevent the spread of other viruses that cause respiratory infections.

Q. What about the use of antivirals to treat novel H1N1 infection?

A. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. This fall, antivirals may be prioritized for persons with severe illness or those at higher risk for flu complications.

Arizona Couple Indicted for Fraudulent Voting During the Presidential Election

TUCSON, AZ—A federal grand jury returned a five-count indictment against James A. Marshall, 63, and Karen S. Marshall, 56, both of Green Valley, Ariz., for Conspiracy to Commit Fraudulent Voting and Fraudulent Voting. The indictment alleges that the Marshalls voted in more than one state during the November 2008 U.S. Presidential election.

The pair will receive a summons to appear for an arraignment on the charges in U.S. District Court in Tucson, on August 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Marshall.

The indictment alleges that James and Karen Marshall voted in both Kansas and Arizona, by way of early ballot, for the November 2008 general election. According to the indictment, the Marshalls represented that they were residents of Arizona on the Arizona early ballot application, and, around the same time, also represented they were residents of Kansas on the Kansas early ballot application. As a result of their representations, the Marshalls received ballots from both Arizona and Kansas. The Marshalls returned their Arizona ballots after signing a sworn statement that they reside in Arizona, and had not voted “and will not vote in this election in any other state during the calender year of this affidavit ....” After voting in Arizona, the Marshalls then returned their Kansas ballots and affirmed that they were legal residents of Kansas.

A conviction for Conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine or both. A conviction for Fraudulent Voting carries a maximum penalty of five years, a $250,000 fine or both. In determining an actual sentence, the assigned judge will consult the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, which provide appropriate sentencing ranges. The judge, however, is not bound by those guidelines in determining a sentence.

An indictment is simply the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution is being handled Raymond K. Woo and Leta H. Hollon, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
