I noticed you said that you said you worked an hour from home. I work a solid 45 minutes from home, and that's interstate driving almost ALL the way...42 miles in a straight line! I also keep a pack in the truck...covered discretely behind the seat. I had Squantos review my "plan" for getting home from work and one of his most useful suggestions was for me to pick up a used mountain bike on the cheap from a pawn shop and keep it locked and covered in the back of the truck. Also, he suggested I keep the tires primed with "slime" (http://www.slime.com).

I've got one main route, with some deviations I've discovered by studying Google Earth, and by making observations and notes visually during the ride to and fro.

If the SHTF, and I'm at work and I can contact the family, I will. If not, then IF everything goes well, I'll be within a mile of the house at night within three days, at which time I can contact them via GMRS radio and approach SAFELY....because at that point it would NOT be safe to approach my home without some sort of notice. If I don't have the radio, or it doesn't work, I'm going to have to be very, very careful.

...anyway...I mainly wanted to pass on Squantos' idea of the bike. I haven't picked one up YET, but I plan on doing so in the next couple of weeks.

I thought about loading a bike in my vehicle. I feel more comfortable on foot though. Also, haven’t figured a good way to travel at low ready on a bike.
