An *excellent* group for canning advice is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canning2/
Lots of messages; one can always choose to read on the website or to get the digest form in order to cut down on email.

Here are some resources I have used

http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/gardening-q-a-how-to-produce-quality-rose-hips/index.html

HGTV used to have an article on drying rose hips
but it doesn’t seem to be online anymore.

http://www.kstrom.net/isk/food/wildrose.html

Here is a recipe for rose hip syrup that was used
during WWII. It comes from We’ll Eat Again by
Marguerite Patten (it’s also in the message
archives on the food-storage group, Venera)

>Rose Hip Syrup
>
>This syrup is suitable for infants, very palatable and so rich in vitamin
C
>that 1 oz is suffiecient for 1 month. It is 15 - 20 times as rich as
>orange
>juice.
>
>2 lbs rose hips, ripe and red
>1 lb 2 oz sugar
>
>Wash hips and put into a stainless pan. Well cover with water and bring
to
>the boil. Simmer until tender (about 10 minutes). Mash well with a
wooden
>spoon. Put into a jelly bag made of flannel and squeeze out as much juice
>as possible. Return pulp to the saucepan and add as mch water as at
first.
>Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 - 10 minutes. Put back into jelly bag
>and squeeze again. Empty bag and wash it thoroughly. Mix the two lots of
>juice and pour into the clean jelly bag. Allow to drip overnight. A
clean
>juice is now obtained free from the hairs that cover the seeds inside the
>fruit wich might cause irritation if not removed.
>
>Boil the juice down until it measures about 1 1/2 pints, then add 1 lb and
>2
>oz of sugar. Stir until dissolved, boil for 5 minutes. Bottle while hot
>in
>perfectly clean hot bottles and seal at once. Small screw-capped bottles
>with rubber washers are suitable. A circle of rubber cut from an old
water
>bottle or Cycle inner tube, and boiled for 10 minutes to sterilise will do
>for a washer. The syrup should be stored in a dark cupboard.
>
>A saltspoonful (~15 drops) should be sufficient for an infant each day.

There are several sites with info you can google rose hips

I to was curious about the rose hips so I started doing some research
this is what I found about the best type of rose for rose
hips...............

Rose hips are the cherry-sized red fruits of the rose bush left behind
after the bloom has died. Although nearly all rose bushes produce rose
hips, the tastiest for eating purposes come from the Rosa rugosa
variety. The flavor is described as fruity and spicy, much like the
cranberry. Harvest the fruits after the first frost when they become
fully-colored, but not overripe. They should yield to gentle pressure
but not be soft or wrinkly. Most recipes advise removing the irritating
hairy seeds before processing the fruit. When cooking with rose hips,
do not use any metal pans or utensils other than stainless steel or

risk discoloration of the fruit and loss of its precious vitamin C
stores.

There are also several other sources for Vit C in an emergency:

Wild garlic
Persimmon leaves
Cranberry
Bearberry
Dandelion
Currants
Hemlock tree
Pigweed
young pine needles
Black spruce
Sprouted seeds or beans - Sprouted seeds were used to cure or prevent
scurvy before synthetic vitamin C was available. Juice extracted
from them can be fed to babies, too.

This is how I have done my food storage. It is awesome and the best way to do it. I store what I eat and eat what I store. Rotation is so easy and I am storing pork loin, meatloaf, steak, chicken, roasts,etc... If any one has questions about it feel free to ask me. I have 8 children and I store what they actually will eat instead of just wheat and beans (which little kids have a hard time eating and enjoying. I store fruit roll ups, chocolate chips, canned bread, canned cake, peanuts, starburst, all candy (for trading with someone when I might run out of toilet paper and need to trade—they will trade easily for sweets). I have 3 solar ovens which Wendy Dewitt uses and I will be and do make beef stroganoff, chicken and rice, bread, cookies, pie, muffins, everything in the solar ovens. I store no fuel for cooking. One less thing to have to worry with children in the home and where to store fuel. Her way is a cheaper way of storing too. I got my
solar ovens for $136.00 (including shipping) Our church members have ordered these too. We had an order of 52 of them. The ladies love em. I also have the none food items stored. (Toothpaste, toothbrush, kotex, razors, meds, shampoo, dish soap, laundry soap, etc.....) I think this is the only way to go. I will be well fed and happy that what I am eating is exactly what I was eating before.

Contact me with any questions...I am slow to get back (8 kids and all) but I will get back.
Lisa

If I recall correctly, she uses a parabolic solar oven. They are
wonderful for fast solar cooking but should be used in full
sun. When you live in an area that gets lots of clouds, I would
recommend a box solar oven. They don’t cook as fast because they
don’t get as hot but they only require full sun 30 minutes of every
hour because they retain heat. We have a Solar Sport Oven and have
been very pleased with it, in fact, we just bought a second
one. There are different kinds of ovens so I would recommend
researching them before buying. Here’s good place to start
http://www.solarovens.org/ If you decide to get one of these, they
do offer group discounts.

Stabbing Epidemic Continues.......

Where, oh where, are the politicians who will save us........?

Violence is the problem, stupid. Violence is a people problem. Not guns, not
knives. Look to the causes of, and solutions for violence, rather the
means, in order to solve the violence problem. You might begin with decent
funding for alcohol and drug addiction treatment. One early intervention
with an alcohol or other drug addict can interdict violence for generations.
The ripple effect is just awesome. On the other hand, take away a gun or a
knife, and you have stopped violence for maybe a minute or so. - T.

FEMA Comprehensive Preparedness Guide Released

April 15, 2009

Overview

The FEMA Comprehensive Preparedness Guide, CPG 101 provides general guidelines on developing Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs). It promotes a common understanding of the fundamentals of planning and decision making to help emergency planners examine a hazard and produce integrated, coordinated, and synchronized plans. This Guide helps emergency managers in State, Territorial, Local, and Tribal governments in their efforts to develop and maintain a viable all-hazard EOP.

CPG 101 continues the more than 50-year effort to provide guidance about emergency operations planning to State, Local, Territorial, and Tribal Governments. Some predecessor material can be traced back to the 1960s-era Federal Civil Defense Guide. Long-time emergency management (EM) practitioners also will recognize the influence of Civil Preparedness Guide 1-8, Guide for the Development of State and Local Emergency Operations Plans, and State and Local Guide (SLG) 101, Guide for All-Hazards Emergency Operations Planning, in this document. While CPG 101 maintains its link to the past, it also reflects the changed reality of the current emergency planning environment.

Arrow International 30cc, 40cc and 50cc Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IAB) Catheters

Audience: Cardiology and cardiovascular healthcare professionals, hospital risk managers
Teleflex Medical and FDA notified healthcare professionals of the Class 1 recall for Arrow International 30cc, 40cc and 50cc Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IAB) Catheters, a component of the Intra-Aortic Pump System which is designed to provide cardiac assist therapy to critically ill people to increase blood flow to the heart. This recall is being conducted because a fault in the connector of the pump tubing assembly may result in failure of the system to decrease ischemia and increase perfusion, leading to organ injury or infarct and may result in patient death. Prolonged exposure could also result in thrombus formation on the IAB and possible subsequent systemic or cerebral thromboembolism.

TULAREMIA, RABBITS - USA (NEW MEXICO)

The New Mexico State Department of Health says rabbits in New Mexico
are getting sick and dying from the bacterial disease tularemia. The
illness is potentially serious in people.

Tularemia is caused by a bacteria found in animals, especially
rodents and rabbits. Symptoms in people are similar to those of
plague: Sudden fever, chills, headaches, diarrhea, muscles aches and
joint pain. Other symptoms can include pneumonia, chest pain, ulcers
on the skin or mouth, swollen and painful lymph glands, swollen and
painful eyes and a sore throat.

Public health veterinarian Dr. Paul Ettestad urges people to follow
the same precautions against tularemia as for plague. They include
not allowing pets to roam and hunt, using flea-control products on
pets, and not handling sick or dead rodents or rabbits.

North Central SARE Releases New Brief Sheets
http://sare.org/ncrsare/pubsres.htm
The North Central Region SARE (NCR-SARE) has released one page ‘Brief Sheets’ about SARE projects funded in their region. The intent of these Brief Sheets is to make easily accessible, topical information available electronically, so people can print out focused NCR-SARE information as they need, on demand. This both reduces waste and allows NCR-SARE to reach targeted audiences. Topics covered include organic farming, specialty crops, beginning farmers, bioenergy, alternative marketing, and agroforestry.

Benefits of Organic Dairying Covered in New Publication
http://www.organic-center.org/science.environment.php?action=view&report_id=139
A calculator has been developed to help consumers, dairy farmers, and food companies estimate the avoided environmental, public health, and animal welfare impacts associated with shifting dairy cows from conventional to organic management. The design of the calculator, the equations in it, and sources of input variable values are described in the ‘Shades of Green’ (http://www.organic-center.org/reportfiles/Shades_of_Green_03302009_final.pdf) (PDF/862KB) report.

Research Shows Diversified Cropping Systems Can Be Profitable
https://www.agronomy.org/story/2009/apr/fri/diversified-cropping-systems-can-be-profitable-as-conventional-systems
University of Wisconsin’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Michael Fields Agricultural Institute agronomists established the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trial (WICST) in 1990 to study various cropping systems. Their findings indicate that diverse, low-input cropping systems can be as productive per unit of land as conventional systems. However, these systems are associated with more variability in yields, primarily due to the difficulty of mechanical weed control in wet springs. Full research results from this current study are presented by Chavas et al. in the 2009 March-April issue of Agronomy Journal.

Report Outlines Local Food Distribution Models
Recent research assessed the performance and success of distribution models for moving food in a local network. The research included interviews with more than 50 chefs, farmers and distributors about what they think works best for moving local food effectively, and what they wish worked better. Geographically, the research focused on large urban markets with partial year (rather than year round) growing seasons and sought out examples of models that deviated from the conventional wholesale distribution system. The report is available as a PDF (http://chefscollaborative.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/public-summary-final1.pdf) (397KB).

USDA Unveils New Reporting System
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB/.cmd/ad/.ar/sa.retrievecontent/.c/6_2_1UH/.ce/7_2_5JM/.p/5_2_4TQ/.d/1/_th/J_2_9D/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?PC_7_2_5JM_contentid=2009/04/0106.xml&PC_7_2_5JM_parentnav=LATEST_RELEASES&PC_7_2_5JM_navid=NE
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack today unveiled an updated version of USDA’s Research, Education and Economics Information System (REEIS) (http://www.reeis.usda.gov/portal/page?_pageid=193,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL), which allows the public to measure the impact and effectiveness of the Department’s research, education and extension programs. The latest version adds additional data sources, opens data to Google Search and provides for extended data analysis. REEIS offers information ranging from agricultural and forestry research projects, to state accomplishment reports, statistics on funding, publications, institutions, faculties and students.

Friends of Family Farmers is Developing a Land and Resource Connection Service
http://www.ifarmoregon.org/
Friends of Family Farmers is happy to announce the official launch of iFarm Oregon, a land and resource connection service with an online database for young and beginning farmers. As the average age of Oregon farmers reaches nearly 58 years, iFarm Oregon is intended to connect new farmers with experienced farmers and those preparing to exit agriculture. The online database, which can be found at http://www.ifarmoregon.org, allows the user to search for listings, which include: agricultural services, land for sale, land wanted, unique leasing arrangements, partnership options, mentoring and internship programs, educational opportunities and financial resources.
