I forgot one more thing El Paso had - every house had those ugly bars on all windows and doors. This was forty years ago. Long before the rest of the country even knew what they were.
Now, I’m seeing them crop up all over our neighborhoods here. They’re not nearly as ugly, though, as they used to be. But it still gives the impression of living in a fortress vs. a home.

Yes, about 25 years ago, my mother had them installed in San Diego.
Until the man attempted to come in, while I was setting here, I never locked my doors, now I do.
Somehow, keeping the good people behind bars is not the way it should be.
