>>>Oh, I know you wouldn’t tell us wrong! It’s only if I follow instructions wrong....<<<

LOL Now CB, you know I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give you a hard time...

Well, I got about a third of my 2014 firewood planted today... I made 500 cuttings and have planted 350 so far... I try to keep planting about 1,000 a year of the clones of hybrid poplars... While they are not the very best for firewood, they do have a pretty good heat output and they grow really fast... by 2014, the cuttings I planted today will be about 4”-5” in diameter and 30’ tall, so I won’t have to split wood, just cut, season and burn...

We burn less than a third of that - but I like to build up a backlog and also try to have enough for daughter and SIL to burn too, which leaves the balance for stockpile. Right now I have enough for next year already cut and under a shed seasoning really well. I have enough room there for about a 3 year supply.

Wow, those trees grow fast in 5 years. Cutting them when they’re the right size for burning is smart.

We just get our firewood from downed or almost downed trees from the forest. Winter is tough on the old trees and there’s always a mess when the snow melts. There’s more than enough just on our property alone, but it does require some fun with chainsaws and log splitters. But we need to do lot cleanup anyway because of fire danger in the summer here.

We went up there from Wed-Sun. Every time I go up, I feel immediately at home and peaceful. Even though it’s not the ideal conditions for survival, it’s home and I love it there. A bit more in the summer (snow is not my favorite - but it is amelting!) I’m going to try to plant some mountain crops - potatoes and barley, I’ve read about.
