And water to drink as well!

Good planning. Did you move there specifically for a survival plan?

Survival was definately in the back of my mind when I was looking for property. The lake is fresh water and there's a hand pump for the well somewhere ('tho I don't have the slightest idea how to use it). When we had extended power outages I went to a spring that's on the side of the road nearby for water and to the truck stop for laundry and showers.

My friend, Glenn has a generator that powers his whole house and his well. I'm jealous - my generator will only power the fridge, TV, a lamp and a fan.

Having a spring right nearby is great (plus the lake). Ok, I'm replying to what you wrote, but I didn't copy here, so I'm sounding rather crazy ;) We only have a seasonal spring at the cabin, so we'll have to come up with ways to store water if/when the wells and storage tanks don't work. I just learned about cisterns on this thread.

Glenn must have a heckuva generator! We only have a little one that will power the frig. Not even the TV! Guess we'll just be going to bed early and getting up with the chickens. That's probably the way it should be - I have thought it silly to keep lights on to stay up way past dark and then to sleep in while there's daylight. We've been living unnaturally for a long time now, I guess..
