Unplanned Resources...
A bit over 2 years ago, when I broke my leg, we let our above ground swimming pool go unused. Some discussion this past year led to us thinking - we really don’t need that bother and expense of trying to keep it up, so we decided to take it down. I put a sump pump in and lowered the water level to a few inches, and cut several slashes in the liner bottom to let it finish draining.
Well, the water never did drain out. Instead, we had a rain that added more to it. The slits in the bottom had ‘healed’ with the leaves that had accumulated. Other things distracted me and before I knew it, the water in the pool was up to 3 feet. Man how time flies...
Reconsidering our decision, we now view it as an insurance plan. The pool, when filled gives us 13,500 gallons of water storage. Not drinking water, but perfect for a garden in case of drought. I could even put a slough to run the roof run-off into it. Used judiciously, that old pool could help us weather a pretty bad drought.
Maybe sometimes the Man Upstairs taps us on the shoulder and says - ‘Better not do that - here let me save that for you...’
Anyway, since we have dry weather about 1 out of every 3 years, and our sandy soil needs water often, we will be keeping our 24 X 4 ‘rain barrel’ just in case...
As I type this, I hear a news report that 842,000,000 in the world will go without food today. 842 Million... That’s 2-2/3 times the entire US population. Maybe I need to plan a few more rows in that garden. I will have the water...
