The ‘so-called’ “Great Recession” can’t remain balanced where it is. It will either fall off the fence on the side of prosperity or it will plunge into the darkness of a full-blown depression. If you were paying attention in junior high school, you know that economic depressions are bad news.<<<

We think in terms of food, but the signs of it are already out there, but you will not hear about the local [for my area] set backs.

The big annual Harley Motorcycle meet at Laughlin, Nevada has begun, as I sit here, a half mile off the highway to Laughlin, it sounds like a war zone, with thousands of motorcycles beginning to arrive in the area, as they go to Laughlin, a steady roar for the past hour or so.

In the past years, it had grown to about 60,000 for the weekend.

Hotel rooms were booked a year ahead and rented for several hundred dollars each, for the most common of rooms.

This year the hotel rooms have not been rented or they were canceled and for the first time in the last 20 or maybe 30 years, they are bringing in the Tour Buses of California gamblers, hoping to make a dollar or two.

The casino workers have already been warned that there will be more layoffs next week.

But did hear of one miracle this morning, not related to above.

On the police scanner, there was a call for the Fire Department, for a small car had hit a semi truck/trailer and it was trapped under the trailer and the people could not get out, the medics went rushing down the I-40 freeway and the Medic copter was in the air, for the call had come in from the Arizona Highway Patrol.

When the Sarge arrived on the scene, somehow, the car was free, off the roadway, one person on the way to the hospital for a MINOR injury and to be checked out.

Can you imagine driving under a semi’s trailer and only having a minor injury? Talk about miracles.

LOL, we have buss loads from Washington DC to the local slot machines that they have at three locations in Delaware. They are desperately trying to close the budget gap for the State.

Governor suggested reducing all State workers pay by 10% and you should hear the screaming... When reduction of the number of State employees was suggested, they said - No - No that wouldn’t save any money at all..... Since we would just have to pay them unemployment, we might as well keep them all on the payroll...

Suggestion now is to increase property taxes 124%.

With that mentality, do you think there will ever be a recovery?

EdF strikers cut power to French homes
Times Online ^ | April 23, 2009 | Not Specified

Posted on Thursday, April 23, 2009 9:32:39 AM by wafflehouse

At an electricity substation on a bleak industrial estate north of Paris a masked union militant is preparing to deprive a neighbourhood of power. His colleague is outside, dragging nervously on a roll-up cigarette while keeping a lookout for police or security guards. “Get a move on,” he says. “And then let’s get out of here.” A switch is pulled down, the door of the sabotaged transformer is locked and the two activists — employees of EdF, the French state electricity supplier — drive off.

In their wake hundreds of houses and a handful of businesses in Montigny-lès-Cormeilles are left without electricity for much of the morning. It was the second time in a week that blackouts had hit the Paris region as striking gas and electricity workers adopted radical tactics to support their call for a 10 per cent pay rise and an end to outsourcing of jobs.

Counterfeit Pesticide Products for Dogs and Cats (Frontline, Advantage)
EPA ^ | 04/22/2009 | EPA

Posted on Thursday, April 23, 2009 9:35:41 AM by LongElegantLegs

EPA, in cooperation with its state and regional regulatory partners, is announcing the issuance of stop sale, use, and removal orders to retailers and other distributors of certain counterfeit pesticide products for control of fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. The stop sale, use, and removal orders are intended to disrupt an effort to distribute counterfeit pet pesticides. The counterfeit pesticides appear to have been unlawfully imported and were packaged in cartons designed to look like legitimately registered pesticides available in the U.S. under the trade names “Advantage” and “Frontline.” The orders prohibit retailers and other distributors from distributing or selling the counterfeit pesticide products and require their proper disposal.

The Trustees of Social Security estimate a current unfunded liability of $100 trillion in 2009. To handle the payments will require either a crushing tax increase or a crushing cutback in benefits.

If that doesn’t knock you over — even in the age of Obama, $100 trillion is still a lot of money — it gets worse. The unfunded liability of Medicare is six times larger in terms of unfunded obligations than that of Social Security. So if you’re keeping score, that’s already $700 trillion in unfunded liability. That’s more than 45 times the size of our entire economy.

I didn't realize SS and medicare were insolvent ALREADY! I thought this was decades away. This is insanity for the politicians - on both sides - to just ignore the looming elephant.

Thx for the great articles, Eagle.

Wow!

We have Hmong farmers near here and they love to grow strawberries. Their homes are usually surrounded by clutter and junk but their farms are usually well tended and clean. No wonder they lavish so much time on their strawberries and raspberries! They are making big money at $2.99 a basket!

April 21, KMBC 9 Kansas City – (National) 6 stolen refrigerated trucks found in KC.

Six stolen refrigerated tractor-trailers were recovered in Kansas City, Missouri near Truman Road and Jackson Avenue on Tuesday. The trucks held hundreds of thousands of pounds of chicken and ribs, most of which is now missing.

Police and U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating. Authorities are concerned that the meat may be spoiled and was sold to unsuspecting vendors. The trucks were taken from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Simmons Foods, an Arkansas-based company, was able to find one of its trucks by using a GPS device attached to it. “It’s a hidden device. Not everybody knows about it. But it works very well,” said Simmons Foods.

“We’re talking about $50,000 trucks each and then the loads on them. The one with a pallet left on it, it was about $60,000 worth of chicken stolen. And all that’s out there on the streets,” a police officer said. Police said mainstream grocers typically buy direct from manufacturers, so it is unlikely they bought the stolen meat. Source:

Cyber Security Tip ST06-003
Staying Safe on Social Network Sites

The popularity of social networking sites continues to increase, especially
among teenagers and young adults. The nature of these sites introduces
security risks, so you should take certain precautions.

What are social networking sites?

Social networking sites, sometimes referred to as “friend-of-a-friend”
sites, build upon the concept of traditional social networks where you are
connected to new people through people you already know. The purpose of some
networking sites may be purely social, allowing users to establish
friendships or romantic relationships, while others may focus on
establishing business connections.

Although the features of social networking sites differ, they all allow you
to provide information about yourself and offer some type of communication
mechanism (forums, chat rooms, email, instant messenger) that enables you to
connect with other users. On some sites, you can browse for people based on
certain criteria, while other sites require that you be “introduced” to new
people through a connection you share. Many of the sites have communities or
subgroups that may be based on a particular interest.

What security implications do these sites present?

Social networking sites rely on connections and communication, so they
encourage you to provide a certain amount of personal information. When
deciding how much information to reveal, people may not exercise the same
amount of caution as they would when meeting someone in person because
* the internet provides a sense of anonymity
* the lack of physical interaction provides a false sense of security
* they tailor the information for their friends to read, forgetting that
others may see it
* they want to offer insights to impress potential friends or associates

While the majority of people using these sites do not pose a threat,
malicious people may be drawn to them because of the accessibility and
amount of personal information that’s available. The more information
malicious people have about you, the easier it is for them to take advantage
of you. Predators may form relationships online and then convince
unsuspecting individuals to meet them in person. That could lead to a
dangerous situation. The personal information can also be used to conduct a
social engineering attack (see Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing
Attacks for more information). Using information that you provide about your
location, hobbies, interests, and friends, a malicious person could
impersonate a trusted friend or convince you that they have the authority to
access other personal or financial data.

Additionally, because of the popularity of these sites, attackers may use
them to distribute malicious code. Sites that offer applications developed
by third parties are particularly susceptible. Attackers may be able to
create customized applications that appear to be innocent while infecting
your computer without your knowledge.

How can you protect yourself?

* Limit the amount of personal information you post - Do not post
information that would make you vulnerable, such as your address or
information about your schedule or routine. If your connections post
information about you, make sure the combined information is not more
than you would be comfortable with strangers knowing. Also be
considerate when posting information, including photos, about your
connections.
* Remember that the internet is a public resource - Only post information
you are comfortable with anyone seeing. This includes information and
photos in your profile and in blogs and other forums. Also, once you
post information online, you can’t retract it. Even if you remove the
information from a site, saved or cached versions may still exist on
other people’s machines (see Guidelines for Publishing Information
Online for more information).
* Be wary of strangers - The internet makes it easy for people to
misrepresent their identities and motives (see Using Instant Messaging
and Chat Rooms Safely for more information). Consider limiting the
people who are allowed to contact you on these sites. If you interact
with people you do not know, be cautious about the amount of information
you reveal or agreeing to meet them in person.
* Be skeptical - Don’t believe everything you read online. People may post
false or misleading information about various topics, including their
own identities. This is not necessarily done with malicious intent; it
could be unintentional, an exaggeration, or a joke. Take appropriate
precautions, though, and try to verify the authenticity of any
information before taking any action.
* Evaluate your settings - Take advantage of a site’s privacy settings.
The default settings for some sites may allow anyone to see your
profile. You can customize your settings to restrict access to only
certain people. However, there is a risk that even this private
information could be exposed, so don’t post anything that you wouldn’t
want the public to see. Also, be cautious when deciding which
applications to enable, and check your settings to see what information
the applications will be able to access.
* Use strong passwords - Protect your account with passwords that cannot
easily be guessed (see Choosing and Protecting Passwords for more
information). If your password is compromised, someone else may be able
to access your account and pretend to be you.
* Check privacy policies - Some sites may share information such as email
addresses or user preferences with other companies. This may lead to an
increase in spam (see Reducing Spam for more information). Also, try to
locate the policy for handling referrals to make sure that you do not
unintentionally sign your friends up for spam. Some sites will continue
to send email messages to anyone you refer until they join.
* Use and maintain anti-virus software - Anti-virus software recognizes
most known viruses and protects your computer against them, so you may
be able to detect and remove the virus before it can do any damage (see
Understanding Anti-Virus Software for more information). Because
attackers are continually writing new viruses, it is important to keep
your definitions up to date.

Children are especially susceptible to the threats that social networking
sites present. Although many of these sites have age restrictions, children
may misrepresent their ages so that they can join. By teaching children
about internet safety, being aware of their online habits, and guiding them
to appropriate sites, parents can make sure that the children become safe
