You’re invited to a free webinar on Hoop Houses for Extending Your Growing Season!

Register now (http://www.attra.ncat.org/webinars2009/hoophouses)

Hoop houses can help small-scale farmers grow more and extend their season, bringing a higher price for crops and developing loyal customers. Find out how hoop houses might benefit your crops in a FREE 60-minute webinar from ATTRA — National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service.

Plan on attending Hoop Houses for Extending Your Growing Season to learn why farmers across the country are already using hoop houses, and if this low-cost tool will work for you. Crops grown in hoop houses often produce larger yields and are of a higher quality than field-grown crops. Crops can be ready for the market earlier, capturing a higher price and building a customer base. Hoop houses can also extend growing seasons, creating a yearlong crop in some situations.

In the webinar, we’ll cover:
- The uses and benefits of hoop houses, including increases in crop quality and yields
- Different types of hoop houses
- Construction, materials and cost estimates
- Management of crops, soil fertility, pests and weeds
- The economics and marketing of crops

There will also be time to have your questions answered.

Your presenters for this webinar are NCAT horticulture specialists Tammy Hinman and Andy Pressman. Hinman holds a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University in horticulture food crops and entomology and a Master’s degree in food system studies from Antioch University. Pressman has a Master’s in sustainable systems from Slippery Rock University. He is a certified permaculture designer. Hinman and Pressman both have market farming experience as well as experience building and growing in hoop houses.

This free webinar will be held May 7 at 11 a.m. MDT. Please register in advance at:

The study found that fiscal stimulus actions seemed “particularly effective” in helping ending recessions, while monetary policy, such as tax cuts, can help shorten their duration but is less effective.

Well, isn't that odd. Spending didn't help us one bit in the 30s, while tax cuts helped end the recession tremendously in 1982.

Had to show my FRiends here my sign for the Tea Parties yesterday: We had 2 Tea Parties in Bakersfield - about 100 or so people at the noon one and 2500 (according to the news) at the evening one. Our Representative (Kevin McCarthy) and House Minority Leaders Boehner were there, for some reason. The mood of the crowd was an amenable to politicians of any time, so (I believe) they were snubbed and not allowed to speak. At first, they were said to have a speech ready. Then, it was said they were only going to answser questions. When it all happened, they were nowhere to be seen or heard - other than on the news, where they said they were only there to listen and take back what they heard.

Answer: About an inch and a half. That would be the distance of the
trajectory of a pistol or rifle bullet through your body, from your heart,

centers. The answer could also be “three to five minutes.” This would be the
expected arrival time of paramedics or the extended travel time to a proper

end of post:

The good news I have to report is that progress is being made in bringing them to justice. Our March 12 news conference in Washington, D.C. was a huge success, earning coverage from Sean Hannity on Fox News, and TV and newspaper coverage in San Francisco, where the bombing murder of Sgt. Brian V. McDonnell took place, plus dozens of other articles. All of this media coverage is reproduced at our website www.usasurvival.org Click on the special section about our Campaign for Justice for Victims of Weather Underground Terrorism.

The terrorists are feeling the heat. And we are now taking our campaign to San Francisco.

Larry Grathwohl, former FBI informant in the Weather Underground and author of Bringing Down America: An FBI Informer with the Weathermen, will repeat his sworn testimony that points to the involvement of the Weather Underground in the bombing murder of Sgt. McDonnell at a 12:30 p.m. News Conference on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Marriott Courtyard San Francisco Downtown, 299 Second Street, in the Rincon Hill room. Grathwohl says that he was at a meeting where Ayers said that his wife Dohrn had planted the bomb.

The San Francisco Police Officers Association has publicly supported our call for a renewed investigation, saying the evidence points to Ayers and Dohrn as the perpetrators.

The San Francisco news Conference is being sponsored by our Campaign for Justice for Victims of Weather Underground Terrorism, a project of America’s Survival, Inc.

The cold case of Sgt. Brian V. McDonnell, killed in 1970 when a bomb exploded at the San Francisco Park Police Station, has been reopened by law enforcement authorities.

Grathwohl and retired San Francisco Police Sergeant Jim Pera, one of the first on the scene of the bombing, will join me to discuss the McDonnell case, the violent history of the Weather Underground, and the reemergence of its members in political and campus organizing activities, including Weather Underground member Mark Rudd, who will be on a speaking tour in the Bay Area.

If you go to our home page at www.usasurvival.org, you can find our press release about the San Francisco event, and reports about the Park Police Station bombing, the Cuban connection to the Weather Underground, and Ayers/Dohrn comrade Mark Rudd. He is on a nationwide book tour.

Thank you for your interest and support. Please contact your friends and associates in the San Francisco Bay Area, alerting them to our event.

Chinese woman dies from suspected SARS on Moscow-bound train

A Chinese woman has died from what may be Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) while traveling on a train from the Far East Russian
city of Blagoveshchensk to Moscow, a medical source said on Wednesday
[15 Mar 2009].

The train was stopped in the central Russian city of Kirov and around
60 train passengers were sent to a local hospital. 6 of them are
reported as running fevers, the source said, although Kirov Region
officials have said that none of them were suffering from SARS. The
carriage in which the woman was travelling was disconnected from the
rest of the train. The train then continued on its way to Moscow.
Russia’s [public health] watchdog spokesman was unable to confirm
that the woman had died from SARS. “Doctors are currently
establishing a preliminary diagnosis,” he said.

Kirov Region administration officials said that the final results of
the analysis would be ready in 24 hours’ time.

Chinese woman dies on a train traveling across Russia

A body of a dead Chinese woman has been taken off a Moscow-bound
train travelling from Russia’s Far East. The woman has allegedly died
of pneumonia. 51 passengers, who were also from China, plus 2 train
attendants traveling aboard the same carriage were taken to hospital
in Kirovsky region in Volga district and the carriage has been
disinfected. Russia’s Health Ministry reported the passengers were in
no danger but were kept under observation.

The train was traveling to the Russian capital from the city of
Blagoveshensk and got stuck for several hours in Kirovsky region [a]
thousand kilometers east of Moscow.

“Isolation is necessary because we still don’t know the cause of the
girl’s death. It could have been a heart attack, or other disease,”
stated the press office of the Kirovsky region’s government.

“We’ve taken all measures to prevent the spread of infection and
taken samples from all people who have been hospitalized. We’ll know
preliminary test results tomorrow. In several weeks, doctors will be
able to draw final conclusions,” added the officials.

The Chinese embassy hasn’t allowed an autopsy of the body to be
carried out but doctors say a medical examination showed the woman
allegedly had fluid on her lungs. It is also known, that 2 hours
before her death, the woman asked the train attendant for medical
help as she wasn’t feeling good. The situation is being closely
monitored by medical professionals, says Russia’s Chief Medical
officer of Health Gennady Onischenko: “The situation is under total
control. There are no complications that people of the Russian
Federation should worry about,” said Onischenko.

[Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory
illness caused by a coronavirus, called SARS-associated coronavirus
(SARS-CoV). SARS was 1st reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the
next few months, the illness spread to more than 2 dozen countries in
North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before the SARS global
outbreak of 2003 was contained. The disease has not recurred
subsequently except in some cases presumed related to laboratory
exposure. It is unlikely that the death of the passenger on board the
train en route from the Russian Far East to Moscow will be attributed
to SARS virus infection. The only reason to consider the diagnosis of
SARS in this case appears to be the patient’s origin from China and
the possibility that pneumonia contributed to the fatal outcome.
There is no indication of spread of the illness to other passengers
or attendants on the train (during the course of a journey probably
extending over several days). Any additional information as to the
etiology or other details would be appreciated.

SARS begins with a high fever. Other symptoms may include headache,
an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches. Some people also
have mild respiratory symptoms at the outset. About 10 percent to 20
percent of patients have diarrhea. After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients
may develop a dry cough. Most patients develop pneumonia. The virus
that causes SARS is thought to be transmitted most readily by
respiratory droplets (droplet spread) produced when an infected
person coughs or sneezes. The virus also can spread when a person
touches a surface or object contaminated with infectious droplets and
then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eye(s). In addition, it is
possible that the SARS virus might spread more broadly through the
air (airborne spread) or by other ways that are not now known.

Further information on SRS can be obtained from the CDC website at

TICK-ASSOCIATED DEATHS, BOVINE, CERVID - USA (SOUTH DAKOTA)

Ticks Tied to Reports of Cattle and Deer Deaths

Acting State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven says the Animal Industry
Board has received several calls about unexplained cattle, horse, and
deer deaths in an area south of Interior, South Dakota. “Local
veterinarians have worked closely with veterinary diagnostic
laboratories in attempts to reach a diagnosis,” Oedekoven said. “At
this point, it appears multiple factors have contributed to cattle
deaths in that area, including ticks, severe weather, lack of
nutrition, and possibly infectious diseases.” A heavy tick
infestation is a common factor in the deaths, he said.

The tick species identified from some of the cattle is known as the
“winter tick,” which can be found on deer, elk and cattle. Ticks and
other external parasites can cause animals to become weak and anemic,
and can affect their immune systems. Oedekoven said cattle can be
treated for ticks, and it may be an important part of a herd health plan.

During pre-calving months, adequate nutrition is a must, as cows
expend large amounts of energy growing healthy calves and preparing
for births. Cattle pregnancies correspond to some of the harshest
winter months, another reason to ensure proper nutrition.
“Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease that causes anemia, has not been
identified in any of the samples collected from cattle,” Oedekoven
said. “Samples from several ranches were tested for a variety of
other diseases, none of which appear to be widespread problems at this point.”

Dr. Oedekoven said a request to report cattle herds with tick
infestations or unexplained deaths was sent to area veterinarians and
ranchers, but no additional reports have been received. “This
experience once again demonstrates the importance, even with disease
issues that seem routine, of getting proper samples and notifying a
veterinarian so diagnosis and any treatments are timely and
appropriate,” Oedekoven said. “Anytime a producer notices something
out of the ordinary, such as increased death losses or high parasite
loads, it is advisable to contact a local veterinarian.”

People seeing dead or ill deer, elk or other wildlife should contact
the nearest Game, Fish and Parks Division of Wildlife office or local
conservation officers. “We are concerned whenever there is loss of
wildlife,” said Tom Kirschenmann, Game, Fish and Parks Chief of
Terrestrial Resources. “Our department has also received calls from
landowners in regards to sick and dead deer. In response, we have
worked closely with those producers and local veterinarians, as well
as the Animal Industry Board, to collect and submit samples to the
diagnostic lab in the same manner as livestock samples. We will
continue to remove sick deer reported by landowners and encourage
them to consult their local veterinarians on livestock questions and concerns.”

The ticks may be a piece of the puzzle here — but the real problems
appear to be more related to the severe winter weather South Dakota
received. These cows were stressed due to weather, calving, and
inadequate nutrition in some cases. The parasite load did not help matters.

There were wide rumors that anaplasmosis was spreading from wildlife
to cattle herds, and the press release was issued in part to dispel
that myth. No anaplasmosis was identified, serologically or
otherwise, in any samples from cattle. Reported to me were 2
seropositive deer samples. However, no organism has been identified
in those samples.

An Ehrlichia was identified in a small number of samples. This helps
to explain an apparent response when weak cattle were treated with
tetracyclines.

We have had significant losses in our state and neighboring states
due to severe winter weather.

[Our thanks to Dustin for this valuable background information.

Winter ticks (_Dermacentor albipictus_) can take a high toll on
livestock and wildlife during the northern winters when they need to
be in good condition to survive. For example:

Musante AR, Pekins PJ, Scarpitti DL. (Alces) Metabolic impacts of
winter tick infestations on calf moose. 2007.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb006/is_43/ai_n29458500/

Abstract:

Moose (Alces alces) are susceptible to late winter mortality from
infestation of winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) throughout much
of North America. Calves, perhaps more so than other ages of moose,
likely experience chronic, and eventually acute anemia from blood
removal by adult female ticks that peaks during weeks 4-6 of the
8-week engorgement period. We modeled the potential metabolic impact
on protein and energy balance of moose calves associated with blood
loss during 4 levels, low to severe, of winter tick infestation. Our
conservative estimates indicated that total blood loss in weeks 4-6,
as a percent of total blood volume, ranged from 27 to 48 percent and
64 to 112 percent during moderate (30 000 ticks) and severe (70 000
ticks) infestations, respectively. The percent of the daily
metabolizable energy requirement needed to replace daily blood loss
during weeks 4-6 was 4.9-8.2 percent and 11.4-19.2 percent during
moderate and severe infestations, respectively. The protein deficit
associated with blood loss and regeneration was the most critical
metabolic impact. Daily protein loss during weeks 4-6 was 29-49
percent and 68-114 percent of the daily protein requirement in
moderate and severe infestations, respectively. Daily protein losses
of approximately 30 to more than 100 percent occurred for 2
continuous weeks. Energy costs associated with compensating for blood
loss would likely elevate the daily energy deficit normal at end of
winter, accelerate nutritional decline and weight loss, and cause
increased physiological stress related to concurrent anemia. Severely
infested calves are obviously susceptible to late winter mortality,
and the impact of moderate infestations would be exacerbated by
secondary parasitic infestations, severe winters, and poor body
condition. (Full text follows at above URL)

Researchers have literally seen the brains of young adults who were heavy marijuana users.

At The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Manzar Ashtari looked at images of 14 young men who smoked for years, including about six joints a day in the year before they stopped.

Ashtari says the ex-users had abnormalities in parts of the brain that interconnect regions involved in memory, language, thinking ability, and ability to make decisions.

Ashtari says her work is preliminary. But she advises:

Trying to prepare
Hello Ferfal:

A friend suggested I read your blog and it has really opened my eyes. I am sorry about all the suffering you and your family are going through.
I wanted to ask you a question. I live in the United States, more specifically, California.
Do you see the signs of an impending economic collapse like yours?
I am trying to prepare, but have limited funds and can only do so much each month. I have tried to locate a product you recommended, a solar charged hand crank battery charger and I cannot find one.

Thanks for the input.

Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline,

My family and I aren’t doing that bad. We mostly worry a lot about the crime problem, just like every other living soul in this country these days. Dengue is also a problem ( it triplicated in the last 15 days) and the unstable economy doesn’t help, but other than that we have each other and are truly blessed. I have a gorgeous wife that loves me and I love her back, and two wonderful boys. What more can a man ask for?

I don’t dare say there will be an economic collapse in USA or not. One thing I know for sure, you’ll experience at least a bit of what we saw here in Argentina.
I know because in spite of not knowing what will happen in the future, I know the consequences of what has already happened, simply because we saw them here too and those things are following a surprisingly similar path.

You have to understand this: What already happened and probably will continue happening with the American economy will have certain consequences.
Crime will go up, people will have harder financial times, and life in general will be a bit more complicated.
Finances are a real concern. A lot of people are loosing their jobs and its important to be able to get new ones or make money on your own, reduce expenses as much as possible and sometimes that isn’t enough, you have to make more money.

Eventually the purchasing power will be affected by inflation (even if they hide inflation, it’s still there). In a nut shell, some people that are middle class today will become poor, and its not the end of the world, but it’s still hard.

Upgrade yourself as a person as much as you can. You’ll be better prepared for life in general, including an economic collapse, and if nothing happens or if it’s just a small slap on the wrist instead of a collapse, you’ll be a happier person anyway so it’s a win-win situation.

This blog has a lot of information, and of course I recommend you my book too. It has some hard earned experience that will no doubt prove useful to anyone getting started. It’s specially written to help you gain the required mindset, and includes a lot of tips and advice.

About the gadget you ask, I have a couple of those solar charged hand crank battery charger things listed on the right column (scroll down) sold by Amazon.

Don’t worry about spending tons of money, worry more about saving as much as you can. Having said that there are certain things you should buy as soon as finances allow, check this miniguide.

As imperative as mindset and awareness are, they wont materialize food and gear when you need them. You need to get those in advance.
