The crops you mentioned are all good for my conditions. If you will not be at your property full time, I suspect root crops would work real well as they can be harvested during a longer time frame than most above ground crops. Beans and corn, particularly need to be harvested as soon as ripe. Winter squash, beets and carrots do well here also. Melons can be difficult to get ripe in our short, growing season. Tomatoes and cukes are popular here and I usually have way too many and furnish neighbors all summer. Corn is my very most favorite veggie. We eat it for lunch and dinner most days during the season. I pick it and hubby has the water boiling, so it is fresh, fresh, fresh. We freeze a lot by cooking several extra ears every meal and just cutting it off the cob and popping in the freezer. I get a jump on the season by sprouting a small amount in the house early. Very labor intensive, planting those sprouted kernels, but well worth it to have that luscious corn a couple weeks before the main crop is ready.

Lots of messages; one can always choose to read on the website or to get the digest form in order to cut down on email.

Here are some resources I have used

HGTV used to have an article on drying rose hips
but it doesn’t seem to be online anymore.

http://www.kstrom.net/isk/food/wildrose.html

Here is a recipe for rose hip syrup that was used
during WWII. It comes from We’ll Eat Again by
Marguerite Patten (it’s also in the message
archives on the food-storage group, Venera)

>Rose Hip Syrup
>
>This syrup is suitable for infants, very palatable and so rich in vitamin
C
>that 1 oz is suffiecient for 1 month. It is 15 - 20 times as rich as
>orange
>juice.
>
>2 lbs rose hips, ripe and red
>1 lb 2 oz sugar
>
>Wash hips and put into a stainless pan. Well cover with water and bring
to
>the boil. Simmer until tender (about 10 minutes). Mash well with a
wooden
>spoon. Put into a jelly bag made of flannel and squeeze out as much juice
>as possible. Return pulp to the saucepan and add as mch water as at
first.
>Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 - 10 minutes. Put back into jelly bag
>and squeeze again. Empty bag and wash it thoroughly. Mix the two lots of
>juice and pour into the clean jelly bag. Allow to drip overnight. A
clean
>juice is now obtained free from the hairs that cover the seeds inside the
>fruit wich might cause irritation if not removed.
>
>Boil the juice down until it measures about 1 1/2 pints, then add 1 lb and
>2
>oz of sugar. Stir until dissolved, boil for 5 minutes. Bottle while hot
>in
>perfectly clean hot bottles and seal at once. Small screw-capped bottles
>with rubber washers are suitable. A circle of rubber cut from an old
water
>bottle or Cycle inner tube, and boiled for 10 minutes to sterilise will do
>for a washer. The syrup should be stored in a dark cupboard.
>
>A saltspoonful (~15 drops) should be sufficient for an infant each day.

There are several sites with info you can google rose hips

I to was curious about the rose hips so I started doing some research
this is what I found about the best type of rose for rose
hips...............

Rose hips are the cherry-sized red fruits of the rose bush left behind
after the bloom has died. Although nearly all rose bushes produce rose
hips, the tastiest for eating purposes come from the Rosa rugosa
variety. The flavor is described as fruity and spicy, much like the
cranberry. Harvest the fruits after the first frost when they become
fully-colored, but not overripe. They should yield to gentle pressure
but not be soft or wrinkly. Most recipes advise removing the irritating
hairy seeds before processing the fruit. When cooking with rose hips,
do not use any metal pans or utensils other than stainless steel or

risk discoloration of the fruit and loss of its precious vitamin C
stores.

There are also several other sources for Vit C in an emergency:

Wild garlic
Persimmon leaves
Cranberry
Bearberry
Dandelion
Currants
Hemlock tree
Pigweed
young pine needles
Black spruce
Sprouted seeds or beans - Sprouted seeds were used to cure or prevent
scurvy before synthetic vitamin C was available. Juice extracted
from them can be fed to babies, too.

This is how I have done my food storage. It is awesome and the best way to do it. I store what I eat and eat what I store. Rotation is so easy and I am storing pork loin, meatloaf, steak, chicken, roasts,etc... If any one has questions about it feel free to ask me. I have 8 children and I store what they actually will eat instead of just wheat and beans (which little kids have a hard time eating and enjoying. I store fruit roll ups, chocolate chips, canned bread, canned cake, peanuts, starburst, all candy (for trading with someone when I might run out of toilet paper and need to trade—they will trade easily for sweets). I have 3 solar ovens which Wendy Dewitt uses and I will be and do make beef stroganoff, chicken and rice, bread, cookies, pie, muffins, everything in the solar ovens. I store no fuel for cooking. One less thing to have to worry with children in the home and where to store fuel. Her way is a cheaper way of storing too. I got my
solar ovens for $136.00 (including shipping) Our church members have ordered these too. We had an order of 52 of them. The ladies love em. I also have the none food items stored. (Toothpaste, toothbrush, kotex, razors, meds, shampoo, dish soap, laundry soap, etc.....) I think this is the only way to go. I will be well fed and happy that what I am eating is exactly what I was eating before.

Contact me with any questions...I am slow to get back (8 kids and all) but I will get back.

If I recall correctly, she uses a parabolic solar oven. They are
wonderful for fast solar cooking but should be used in full
sun. When you live in an area that gets lots of clouds, I would
recommend a box solar oven. They don’t cook as fast because they
don’t get as hot but they only require full sun 30 minutes of every
hour because they retain heat. We have a Solar Sport Oven and have
been very pleased with it, in fact, we just bought a second
one. There are different kinds of ovens so I would recommend
researching them before buying. Here’s good place to start
http://www.solarovens.org/ If you decide to get one of these, they
do offer group discounts.

LOL We seem to be traveling the same interest paths...

I saw that and was about to post it when I saw your post...

I think their tactic is to desensitize everyone by throwing it all against the wall to see what sticks because we are too tired of constantly having to fight back.

I had heard that this was in the works and expected bill clinton would try for it.

What a crock of.........., there is no limit to the moves we will see in the future.

LOL, at least the Tea Party is going down today, I heard that the one in Washington was organized by a “stay at home mom” and then heard that they were organized by big money Republicans.............

Stabbing Epidemic Continues.......

Where, oh where, are the politicians who will save us........?

Violence is the problem, stupid. Violence is a people problem. Not guns, not
knives. Look to the causes of, and solutions for violence, rather the
means, in order to solve the violence problem. You might begin with decent
funding for alcohol and drug addiction treatment. One early intervention
with an alcohol or other drug addict can interdict violence for generations.
The ripple effect is just awesome. On the other hand, take away a gun or a
knife, and you have stopped violence for maybe a minute or so. - T.

Good news is that radification takes years, sometimes decades. And there’s enough states (I hope) that won’t go in for changing the Constition on a whim. Especially after the economy tanks because of Obama’s socialism.

Our 2 Tea Parties were organized by local grassroots groups. But for some reason, the Minority House Leader is showing up. I personally think he has no place at these events. They are not partisan and the Republicans have been almost as bad as the Dems. Except, I do have to give the House credit for HR4437 (dealing with illegal immigration correctly - didn't pass the Senate of course) and for not giving Obama's stimulus bill one vote. But still - unless he's 100% on our side and will have a back bone, he has no place at the Tea Parties.

Arrogant Americans, Mr. President?

April 14, 2009
Peter Heck

As I was sitting in church waiting for the start of the service, my grandpa came walking towards me pointing his finger. No matter how old I get, and no matter how long he’s been out of the U.S. Navy, that’s still an intimidating sight. As he approached me, his voice quivered as he said, “We saved that continent twice...how dare my president apologize for this country’s arrogance.” My grandpa is right. Americans need not apologize to the world for their arrogance; rather, Americans should apologize to their forefathers for the arrogance of their president.

Barack Obama’s first foreign trip as President of the United States has confirmed the naiveté so many of us feared during the election cycle. But worse than that, it has also demonstrated that our president suffers from either a complete misunderstanding of our heritage and history, or an utter contempt for it. Neither is excusable.

Garnering cheers from the French of all people, President Obama declared, “In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” Consider that Obama spoke these words just 500 miles from the beaches of Normandy, where the sand is still stained with 65-year-old blood of “arrogant Americans.”

Indeed, columnist Mark Whittington observes, “One should remind Mr. Obama and the Europeans how America has ‘shown arrogance’ by saving Europe from itself innumerable times in the 20th Century. World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and the wars in the Balkans were largely resolved by American blood, treasure, and leadership.” But all that appears lost on the president’s seemingly insatiable quest to mend fences he imagines have been tarnished by the bullish George W. Bush.

If Obama wishes to continue trampling the presidential tradition of showing class to former office holders and publicly trash Bush for his own personal gain, so be it. But all Americans should make clear that no man – even if he is the president – will tarnish the legacy of those Americans who have gone before us. Ours is not a history of arrogance. It is a history of courage, self-sacrifice, and honor.

When abusive monarchs repressed the masses, Americans resisted and overthrew them. When misguided policies led to the unjust oppression of fellow citizens, Americans rebelled and overturned them. When millions of impoverished and destitute wretches sought a new beginning, Americans threw open the door and welcomed them. When imperial dictators were on the march, Americans surrendered their lives to stop them. When communist thugs threatened world peace, Americans bled to defeat them. When an entire continent was overwhelmed with famine and hunger, Americans gave of themselves to sustain it. When terrorist madmen killed the innocent and subjugated millions, Americans led the fight to topple them.

This is the legacy that generations of Americans have left. If President Obama seeks stronger relations with the world community, perhaps he should begin by reminding them of these very truths, rather than condemning his own countrymen on foreign shores.

This “obsessive need to put down his own country,” has caused blogger James Lewis to call President Obama a “stunningly ignorant man” who has evidently never spoken to a concentration camp survivor, a Cuban refugee, a boat person from Vietnam, a Soviet dissident, or a survivor of Mao’s purges.

Unfortunately, I can no longer bring myself to give Mr. Obama that benefit of the doubt. Not after looking at the pain in my grandpa’s eyes...a man who still carries shrapnel in his body from his service to this country.

As a student and teacher of history, I recognize that America has made mistakes...plenty of them, in fact. But one of the great things about our people has been their courage and humility in admitting and correcting those mistakes. God willing, they will prove that willingness again in four years and correct the mistake that is the presidency of Barack Obama.

Peter Heck (peter@peterheck.com) hosts a two-hour, daily call-in radio program on WIOU (1350 AM) in Kokomo, Indiana. “The Peter Heck Show” comments on social and political issues — and doesn’t shy away from recognizing how faith influences politics.

Confirmed: The Obama DHS hit job on conservatives is real
By Michelle Malkin • April 14, 2009 12:01 AM

Yesterday, Roger Hedgecock and the Liberty Papers posted an unclassified DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis report titled:

Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.

The “report” (PDF file here) was one of the most embarrassingly shoddy pieces of propaganda I’d ever read out of DHS. I couldn’t believe it was real.

I spent the day chasing down DHS spokespeople, who have been tied up preparing for a very important homeland security event later today: The First Lady is coming to visit their Washington office. Priorities, you know.

Well, the press office got back to me and verified that the document is indeed for real.

They were very defensive — preemptively so — in asserting that it was not a politicized document and that DHS had done reports on “leftwing extremism” in the past. I have covered DHS for many years and am quite familiar with past assessments they and the FBI have done on animal rights terrorists and environmental terrorists. But those past reports have always been very specific in identifying the exact groups, causes, and targets of domestic terrorism, i.e., the ALF, ELF, and Stop Huntingdon wackos who have engaged in physical harassment, arson, vandalism, and worse against pharmaceutical companies, farms, labs, and university researchers.

By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives. And the intent is clear. As the two spokespeople I talked with on the phone today made clear: They both pinpointed the recent “economic downturn” and the “general state of the economy” for stoking “rightwing extremism.” One of the spokespeople said he was told that the report has been in the works for a year. My b.s. detector went off the chart, and yours will, too, if you read through the entire report — which asserts with no evidence that an unquantified “resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalizations activity” is due to home foreclosures, job losses, and…the historical presidential election.

In Obama land, there are no coincidences. It is no coincidence that this report echoes Tea Party-bashing left-wing blogs (check this one out comparing the Tea Party movement to the Weather Underground!) and demonizes the very Americans who will be protesting in the thousands on Wednesday for the nationwide Tax Day Tea Party.

From the report, p.2:

Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

From the report. p. 3:

(U//LES) Rightwing extremists are harnessing this historical election as a recruitment tool. Many rightwing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities, and restrictions on firearms ownership and use. Rightwing extremists are increasingly galvanized by these concerns and leverage them as drivers for recruitment. From the 2008 election timeframe to the present, rightwing extremists have capitalized on related racial and political prejudices in expanded propaganda campaigns, thereby reaching out to a wider audience of potential sympathizers.

(U) Exploiting Economic Downturn

(U//FOUO) Rightwing extremist chatter on the Internet continues to focus on the economy, the perceived loss of U.S. jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors, and home foreclosures. Anti-Semitic extremists attribute these losses to a deliberate conspiracy conducted by a cabal of Jewish “financial elites.” These “accusatory” tactics are employed to draw new recruits into rightwing extremist groups and further radicalize those already subscribing to extremist beliefs. DHS/I&A assesses this trend is likely to accelerate if the economy is perceived to worsen.

From the report, p. 5:

(U//FOUO) Over the past five years, various rightwing extremists, including militias and white supremacists, have adopted the immigration issue as a call to action, rallying point,
and recruiting tool. Debates over appropriate immigration levels and enforcement policy generally fall within the realm of protected political speech under the First Amendment, but in some cases, anti-immigration or strident pro-enforcement fervor has been directed against specific groups and has the potential to turn violent.

And echoing the anti-military bigotry last seen in that disgusting Penn State University training video, there’s this on p. 7:

(U) Disgruntled Military Veterans

(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.

There’s no hackneyed left-wing stereotype of conservatives left behind in this DHS intelligence and analysis assessment. I asked both DHS spokespeople to tell me who, specifically, the report was accusing of “rightwing extremist chatter” and which “antigovernment” groups are being monitored as “extremists.” They say they’ll get back to me.

In the meantime, be aware of this from the report, p. 8:

(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months to ascertain with greater regional specificity the rise in rightwing extremist activity in the United States, with a particular emphasis on the political, economic, and social factors that drive rightwing extremist radicalization.

Better make a few last-minute signs for the Tea Party. Obama’s DHS is watching:

Honk if you’re a radicalized rightwing extremist!

Guilty of rightwing extremist chatter

Anti-government, pro-freedom: Sue me

Oh, I’m sure DHS will be issuing its report on self-proclaimed bank terrorists like Bruce Marks of NACA and criminal rackeeters harassing private citizens in their homes to “exploit the economic downturn” any day now.

***

Update: John Hinderaker weighs in the report.

Also good reading in Jonah Goldberg’s thread here.

Delmarva Residents Join The Nation For A "Tea Party"
By MICHELLE HINKLE
(DELMARVA -- WMDT) 4/15/2009

Photographer: Chris Elliott

Two hundred thirty five years after Boston, Americans across the nation are having another tea party. More than 2,000 cities are rallying on tax day including one right here on Delmarva in Georgetown. All of the protesters are spreading the same message, they've been "taxed enough already".

"We're having a peaceful protest against excessive taxation and asking our elected representatives to spend our money more responsibly," said Donna Gordan, one of the event's planners.

"They're putting our grandkids and great-grandkids into debt just through the spending, the needless spending. That's what we're here for," said protester Eric Anderson.

Protesters say they may not be dumping tea, but their message is just as important. They say the government is spending too much and corporations shouldn't be getting bailed out. One protester says taxes will have to be raised to pay off the growing national debt.

"It's going to fall on all of us. Those of us who go to work everyday, those of us who don't ask anything from the government, and those of us who pay our taxes," said Gordan.

Protesters in Georgetown say they are ready for change, and not the kind jingling in your pocket. Protesters plan to picket every tax day until their voices are heard.

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in D.C. took another step Tuesday to immunize federal employees from lawsuits by citizens and exempt them from the basic American republican (small “r”) principle that no one is above the law. The ruling also leaves citizens without the equal protections provided by the Fourteenth Amendment. In addition, it reinforces the Orwellian concept that “all pigs are equal; some pigs are more equal than others” i.e., government officials.

The court’s decision involved a lawsuit brought by Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich against Democratic Congressman John Murtha. The suit was filed in response to a remark made by Murtha at a press conference in May 2006 accusing Wuterich and his men of killing Iraqi civilians, including women and children, “in cold blood.” A Marine Corp inquiry later found Wuterich and his men had acted properly during a firefight on Nov. 19, 2005 in Haditha, Iraq in which two Marines were killed.

The Court found that Murtha could not be sued under the 1988 Westfall Act which gives federal employees immunity from lawsuits when acting in the course of their official duties. The Court’s ruling in this case seems to be improper both on legal and constitutional grounds. Under the Westfall Act, in order for immunity to be granted, the Attorney General, or his designee must issue a “scope certification” certifying that the “defendant employee was acting within the scope of his office or employment at the time of the incident out of which the claim arose….”

Also, under the Westfall Act, the plaintiff has the right to appeal the Attorney General’s scope certification. Furthermore, the Act does not grant immunity to the defendant, it transfers liability from the defendant to the government which still allows the plaintiff to get satisfaction in court for the injury incurred. In this case, it would appear that the fact that Murtha was a member of Congress was not incidental to the case. There is no job requirement that elected officials call press conferences to give their personal opinions on current events. That is purely a personal or political decision on the part of the individual involved.

The Constitution in Article One, Section Six provides limited immunity for Senators and Congressmen under very narrow circumstances.

“They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.”

Just as Section 8 of Article I, limits the power of Congress by its specificity, Section 6 limits the legal immunity afforded members of Congress for the same reason. Under this Section, Legislators are immune from arrest only while in “attendance”. In other words, only while the Congress is in session and they would normally be in attendance. They are also immune from arrest while traveling to or from a session of Congress.

Section Six also provides that a member of Congress cannot be called to account regarding any speech or debate in either house. It is obvious that the reference here is to remarks made in the respective chambers, not in a TV studio or before a microphone at an outside press conference.

Aside from the violation of the “free republic” principle that all men are equally subject to the rule of law and equally entitled to its protections, this interpretation of the law has the potential of incrementally denying citizens any legal redress for actions committed by federal officials between election cycles, no matter how egregious. Under the present circumstances of one party rule and the obvious intent of the current administration to infringe on the liberties of citizens, this is a dangerous precedent.

FEMA Comprehensive Preparedness Guide Released

April 15, 2009

Overview

The FEMA Comprehensive Preparedness Guide, CPG 101 provides general guidelines on developing Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs). It promotes a common understanding of the fundamentals of planning and decision making to help emergency planners examine a hazard and produce integrated, coordinated, and synchronized plans. This Guide helps emergency managers in State, Territorial, Local, and Tribal governments in their efforts to develop and maintain a viable all-hazard EOP.

CPG 101 continues the more than 50-year effort to provide guidance about emergency operations planning to State, Local, Territorial, and Tribal Governments. Some predecessor material can be traced back to the 1960s-era Federal Civil Defense Guide. Long-time emergency management (EM) practitioners also will recognize the influence of Civil Preparedness Guide 1-8, Guide for the Development of State and Local Emergency Operations Plans, and State and Local Guide (SLG) 101, Guide for All-Hazards Emergency Operations Planning, in this document. While CPG 101 maintains its link to the past, it also reflects the changed reality of the current emergency planning environment.
