Lint: The Silent Fire Hazard

What do you probably have in your home or apartment that is annually responsible for around 15,000 fires, 20 deaths, over 300 injuries and more than $80 million in property damage?!
Answer: Your clothes dryer. And if you have an electric clothes dryer, did you know the chance of fire is 250% greater than if you have a gas dryer?

Yep, I found those stats from a 1999 report developed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shocking also. Well the good news is that the fires were not due to anything inherently dangerous about the dryer as an appliance, but more so the lack of proper maintenance by the user. As it turns out the fire originated most frequently from two places: the dryer venting and the lint trap.

I get really annoyed when I find out after the fact that I was supposed to do maintenance on something and I did not know it, so don’t think you are alone in being surprised in what I’m going to tell you. There is probably an unbelievable amount of dangerous lint lining the walls of your dryer ducting and inside your dryer right now that you need to clean out. It does not matter that you regularly clean out the lint filter in your dryer, “lint happens.” Loads of clothes taking longer and longer to dry is a classic sign of lint build-up.

Sound the wedding bells! My brother is getting married, and my toddler will be toddling down the aisle.

I held my breath when the bride-to-be called about the flower girl dress. Since she is a practical person (and reads my blog!), she offered to let me find a dress within our price range.

Here’s my 6-step strategy for finding special occasion clothes without specialty prices:

1. Internet research: What style is appropriate? How much do those cost? Brand names?

2. Go through the bag of hand-me-down holiday dresses. In this case, nothing coordinated with the wedding colors.

3. Visit my local consignment and/or thrift stores, prepared to pounce on the right dress.

4. No luck? Check the sales at Dillards, Strasburg Children and local boutiques.

6. Purchase clothing on Ebay once I know the general style and size.

It doesn’t always take me 6 steps! Often, I find something perfect in the hand-me-down bag or with a quick visit to the consignment store.

Perhaps it will take one extra trip to Dillard’s, where I found a white smocked gown marked down to $16. If that didn’t work, I could order something from Ebay knowing that the Strasburg size 2 is a perfect fit.

I save about $50 each time I employ this strategy, making it worth an extra hour of time. And darned if she doesn’t look cute as a result!

Now, that's my kind of guy. We have a 1948 German Bungartz (sp) tractor that's a real workhorse. That is what hauls the tiller. Just got the tractor working last spring, then the bearing started smoking, so it became my job to follow behind the tiller with a bucket of grease and a paintbrush. We kept it working for the 08 season but definitely need new bearings if we are to use it this year. Love that tractor and tiller. It is small and powerful. It doesn't grind the earth to a powder, just tills it enough to plant. Real disadvantage is taking the tiller off to put on a draw bar to use the tractor for other purposes. It's a son of a gun to line up the power takeoff just right. We haul wood from the swamp with this. It's a very steep hill down to the swamp and difficult maneuvering between rocks and trees. This small tractor with a short wheel base cart works real well. Thinking seriously about your strawberry planting method DelaWhere. Have scads of all size pots from my flower selling days. Loads of available water from my driven well. If I locate it near the back door, I can water every evening if needed.

I would strongly recommend watering in morning... Damp overnight tends to cause leaf diseases to increase. Sun will dry it during the day.
