In the summertime, I usually have ten hummers, or so. I bought a feeder with eight openings, and they were full all the time. But, once ‘roufous’ got here in July, he wouldn’t let any other hummers near it - so I took it down. Now, I just have the one feeder - with four openings.
Most of the hummers have migrated by October - but for those who stick around, I always keep fresh syrup out there for them. (All the bird information I have ever read, says that keeping a feeder out will NOT keep them from migrating.)
The hummingbird makes that ‘clicking’ noise, LUV - all year round.
I had one of those that showed up and stayed for about a week. He plunked himself on a branch right next to the feeder and guarded it day and night. No other hummingbird could get close to it. He had the most beautiful iridescent copper colored breast....but MEAN he was!!! I was happy when he decided to move on.
