"There are few things more appealing than a clever man ... although Darks is awfully young compared to some ..." Methinks there is a veiled compliment lurking here. Possibly two.
At first I thought Evan's spiked tentacles of intrusion could have been someone reading over my shoulder, but clearly it's just (garbled) minds thinking alike.
I have to admit though, the spikes do add a classy touch.

I'm only 33.
Will be 34 this year.
If I shave the scruff off my chin, I lose a year or three in outward apparent age.
Seems to be the family curse, to age inwardly faster than what is apparent on the outside.
..As with Karsh Kentu, all outward appearances were illusory in nature as his true appaearance he hid deep beneath veils and illusion, never showing what he deemed his shame.
Arselen peered intently at him, and it seemed to her eyes that his face rippled, shifted, and she saw.
"How old are you really?" she sounded highly skeptical of his stated age of 28.
Wouldn't she be surprised to hear tell that he was actually 1028 and forcibly recalled to service of the crown after his death in battle?
