Joe Kennedy "began" the family fortune by some basic insider trading in the stock market (shortly before he was named as head of the SEC, and made the very practices he used then, illegal for others). He then gravitated to the film industry, and made a number of shady dealing there, as well (all this before Prohibition, and the bootlegging he performed at that time).

Sam Giancana, himself, called Joe Kennedy "one of the most crooked guys I know", and for him to say this is meaningful...
