I had a 3rd grade teacher who would whack our desks and say, “Straighten that spine”. Loved Mrs Smith! :-)
I had many such “teachers” in school and out. I’ve tried to carry on the “old school” approach with my son and all my son’s friends. I always say, “If I didn’t love you, it wouldn’t make any difference to me. Because I do, get with it!”
I’ll never forget the look of long suffering he gave me as he went out the door in his black suit and top coat for Cotillion. It was as though I’d made him stand naked in the street and walk on hot coals. Just the other night at dinner (some 10 years later), he made reference to Cotillion and how you should place your knife and fork to indicate your plate is ready to be cleared. I thought they’d have to find the smelling salts. ;-)
