This may sound like a stupid question but I'm serious. Does your modem actually even have call waiting or modem on hold capabilities? So do some don't is why I ask and I'm on dial up with call waiting. If you cancel the call waiting all that does is give callers a busy instead of ring tone. You should have some program on the machine like Modem on hold etc that sets these issues. If not then you may need to buy another dial up modem with that capability. Now you got me looking how to teak mine LOL.. No issue for me as I have two land lines and one belongs to my computer.

On a Dell it’s called Net Waiting in the Programs. Others call it Modem on hold etc.

Perfect. No interruptions by phone calls.
DSL is great, but now the phone sometimes rings. People that I want to talk to have my cell phone#.

Call wiating is your problem.
In order to solve your problem, open your dial up dialog box. Where you see the phone number your ISP provided you, add a *70 in front of it.
Example if the phone number you use for dialup is 555-1212, the number in the box should read *705551212.
If this does not work, you have several alternatives.
1) Have the telco remove “Call Waiting” from your services.
2) Install a second, dedicated line exclusively for your computer.
3) Best option, if you can afford it, get DSL.
4) Look for a wireless service provider.
Good luck.
