A MYSTERIOUS blue car-shaped UFO has been spotted in Darwin as it flew across a cloudy wet season sky.
But in the words of amateur photographer Mark Schmutter, 79, "It does look like a car but what would a car be doing up in the sky?"
Mr Schmutter said he snapped these shots as he was standing on the ninth-floor balcony of a friend's CBD apartment just before 6pm earlier this week.
"I decided to go out on the balcony and take some shots of Darwin," he said.
"I just held the camera up and I saw this thing flash through the sky and I thought 'Oh my goodness what was that?', and then it came back again so I hit it with the camera."
He said he saw the object move across the sky about the speed of a plane - then it flew straight upwards before it disappeared into the sky.
"But it wasn't an airplane, no noise ... it was a fair way away, you know, but I didn't hear any noise."
Mr Schmutter, of Lyons, said he had no idea what it was - be it a strange, newfangled aircraft or a UFO shaped like a muscle car.
"I've got no idea about aliens, but anything's a possibility, isn't it?"
Defence spokesman Stephen Mullins confirmed no Defence aircraft were flying in the area at that time Tuesday night.
The Top End Flying Club last year suggested many of the local sightings of UFOs could actually be Sigma-4 ultralight aircraft - informally dubbed the flying sperm - which fly slowly and with little noise.
The club's Mark Christie said the blue object didn't resemble any of their aircraft though.
He said at least one of the photos looked to be altered with the object cut and pasted on to the background.
But Mr Schmutter insisted none of the pictures had been 'Photoshopped' in any way.
He said he was hoping someone could tell him what it was he caught on camera.

The truth is, my Linksys router let me down one too many times, and I threw it as hard as I could. Wondered what happened to it.
Red meat, bro.
I can't take credit for it. Saw it on a t-shirt at a dragstrip more than 20 years ago.
Probably,
However . . . the rabidly willfully blind and ignorant naysayers are out in force . . . takes a lot of the fun out of it . . .
Though even that is better than the result of it all being proven nightly on CNN.
I REALLY hope THAT is delayed as long as possible. Alas, it looks to be getting alarmingly closer.
Particularly with Podesta et al appointed to key positions in the event the decision has been made to out it all.
Let me direct your attention to this: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2167184/posts
That’s a good idea! I am thinking one of those inflatable kitty pools.
THANKS.
I’ll ponder some comments in the shower . . .
LUB,
TAKE CARE BUDDY.
You are cared for.
LOL!
Alright Darks, how much did you charge him for the photoshops?
A Hoon is Aussie slang for a crazy driver, usually speeding teenagers or adults who behave like teens.
Hoon can also be used as an adjective, such as “Some idiot just went hooning passed my house at 100MPH!”
I think the aliens are staying over northern Australia because they don’t have so many road rules and speed cameras up there. Imagine a young hoon alien having to call up Dad on the E.T. phone - “Dad, I’m in Sydney and they impounded and crushed the planet-hopper. We’re going to have to find another way to get to Rigel 7.”
;-)
None.
Tsk.
You’re going to have to charge more.
