Posted on 12/31/2008 2:37:33 PM PST by budhead123

Help I have a Border Collie / mix Dog He is 1 1/2 yrs old, he is a very smart dog, The other night I had to go looking for him and found him on a deer.... still alive! He has a sisiter that is 6 months old and is a Black Lab /mix. she to was with him shortly getting in on the action. I pulled him off. and scolded him allthe way home, this moring I let them out and went in to bake a cake, 30 min. i called them to come in and no one came. I put on my jacket and when out to look for them. Just as I started up the 4 wheeler they both came running around the shop and both are cover in blood. I called to the boder collie and asked him to show me what he caught and he took me to the dead deer. Is this something I shuld be worried about? How do I stop this from ever happening again, some one help! There must be a way I do not want to have to put him down. thank you

Yes worry about it. Your dog is likely to end up getting shot by an angry hunter for running deer. During deer season keep your dog under your control at all times.

I don’t hunt so maybe some deer hunters will chime in and correct any misconceptions.

A deer nearly totalled my car a couple of years ago. I say let the dog have ‘em!

Well the dog's in danger.

Here in the northeast the game wardens will summarily shoot any dog that chases deer.

The only humane thing to do is to ensure that the dog remains tied up. It can't be allowed to run free.

There is no cure for dogs that kill other animals.

I am sure the State Game Wardens would know what to do.

Call them.

You could try a pat on the head along with a hearty “Good boy!”. Then quietly take the carcass and cut it up for steaks, chops and dog food.

You either have 1 very fast dog, or that deer was injured or sick, imo. When I was a kid, I used to watch from the loft of our barn as our collie dog chases deer , and he never even managed to get close to one. I’d say it was the same deer the second time, and he had some kind of problem that would have made him fall victim to any of several predators. In short, you’ll never cure the dog of wanting to kill deer. But the deer will cure the problem by not being slow enough for him to catch, usually.

There are too many deer and not enough deer hunters... and the wolves are all gone... and too bad there aren’t more dogs like yours.

Maybe contain your dog? If you let him run wild, he will become wild. He certainly should not be put down for being a normal dog.

You may need that dog when the Obamans take over. They might outlaw meat because of cow flatulence causing global warming.

I can’t imagine a border collie going toe-to-toe with a deer and not needing at least some stitches.
