Guns & Ammo ^ | Dec. 19, 2009 | Press Release

Posted on 12/28/2008 3:19:57 PM PST by smokingfrog

Tactical Shotguns now available to general public.

North Haven, CT (January 2009)—From U.S. Service men and women around the world to law enforcement agencies across the country, Mossberg shotguns have experienced nearly four decades of combat and combat readiness in the hands of armed forces world-wide. Enjoying a long-standing relationship with the U.S. armed forces, Mossberg is the manufacturer of the only 12 gauge pump action shotgun ever to pass the stringent U.S. Military Mil-Spec 3443 standard.

Now, for 2009 Mossberg will make available select 590A1 models to the general public. All models will come standard with heavy-walled barrels, metal trigger guards and safety buttons in a durable Parkerized finish. A full range of sighting options will be available in front bead, ghost ring rear or 3-dot configurations. Several variations of stocks will also be available with wood, synthetic, speed feed and adjustable aluminum. All 590A1 models come drilled and tapped from the factory making it easy to mount a Picatinny rail, scope base or other optic options. Other accessories available for the 590A1 are heat shields, Picatinny rails as well as orange buttstocks and forearms for training purposes.

The Mossberg shotgun has a proven place not only in the field but also for home/personal defense.

I agree the Maverick is a good buy. The one thing I don’t care for on them is they have only one action bar. Of course John Browning only put one on his design which Ithaca copied in the famous model 37.

I still much prefer the double action bars of the model 500, Remington 870, Winchester 1200, 1300 etc.

> 590’s have been available to the public for 2 decades I dont know how old this pres release is! I have seen A1 models (thicker barrel for the navy) for sale several years ago.

Question? Why would the Navy model have a thicker barrel?

I have a Mossberg Maverick. I have the standard barrel for hunting turkey, etc and I also have the home defender barrel, which is shorter. This is a cheaper option, but damn that tactical shotgun looks fun!

Actually the current/newer models have two action bars.

Thicker barrel makes a better club when you run out of ammo.

That is good to know. I always wondered if they really saved any money going to the single action bar.

Thanks... that makes sense.

(so the Navy’s likely to run out of ammo? That’s disconcerting. Obama better fix that pronto, instead of bailing out all his rich mates.)

I’ve got a Maverick 20 gage coming in soon. Didn’t know they made a 18.5 inch version. Would have bought that if I had known. I just chop the long barrel in my lathe.

If you are planning on going around corners with any rifle or shotgun, you might want to reconsider. It would really suck to have your gun taken away from you in the middle of the night.

Either use a pistol, or stay put and let the bad guys come to you.

I have a basic (but hopefully not too ignorant) question about shotguns.

Is there a reason that I never see them come with a ammo clip (like the m-16) ? It seems that it would take a long time to reload a shotgun under pressure without the benefit of having a clip.

Thanks in advance.

I think it was in case there was water in the barrel it wont explode when you shoot it. I compared one side by side to a 590 and it was pretty much the same shotgun.

I just got a 500; my other 500 is on back order.... a friend has a 590 on back order.... even Mossberg doesn’t know when it’ll get to the retailer. They are SWAMPED... just like everyone else.

To all of that, I would add this:

In a suburban environment, using birdshot (say, #7 or #6) would give a reliable killing power inside of 7 yards (ie, inside a house or room), yet have limited power to punch through an exterior wall, or limited power if any pellets did get through an exterior wall.

I’m in complete agreement with you as to their versatility. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, as versatile as a shotgun. I’ve used mine for everything up to coyotes, dispatching livestock, cutting down small trees, eliminating squirrels and gophers... even disposing of 5” and 3.5” disk drives from old computers where I don’t want anyone reading my data.

A shotgun simply cannot be beat for the all-around firearm.
