We would add, however, that it does not seem to have dented the pathological hatred of our culture and civilization on the part of those who still speak and act as if Rousseau had been right and we are the savages.
The pathological hatred of our civilization comes from the wrong-headed idea that people are basically good and noble and the reason why we have bad people in the world is because our civilization makes them bad rather than the correct view which is that people are pretty nasty and brutal to each other naturally and civilization actually tames them and gets them to behave better than they would otherwise. I highly recommend Keeley’s book. His examples of archaeologists ignoring the obvious are amazing and some of his conclusions turn conventional left-wing wisdom on their head (e.g., Keeley concludes that extensive interactive between two cultures actually increases the violence because the interaction gives them more reasons to fight).
