They are anti collision lights.
Why would a ship with the ability to move at amazingly fast speed need to worry about not being able to get out of the way of a slow moving human plane?

Good question. I don't know the answer. I read a little about UFO'S in the early 1960’s. Maybe their insurance policies started requiring them. The first ones(before our aviation) didn't have navigation lights. After a few near misses the lights started appearing.
