That guy to McKays left in the picture..to the right to the viewer is Dennis (Denny) Frizell...he took over at the University of Tampa as football coach, after Earle Bruce left for Iowa State, then on to take over from Woody Hayes at OSU. Frizell was the coach at UT when Matuszak was the Number one draft pick in 73. UT had an enrollment of about 2000 in those days, but, on occasion, would pack the Old Sombrero (about 40k) before its expansion to about 76k when the Bucs came to town. THAT is when the NFL knew they had a market in Tampa/St Pete. John McKay fell in love with Tampa in those days, and most of Tampa loved John McKay. He was happy to get away from the SoCal “rat race” and he mentioned it many times.
