My left knee gave me so much pain, and was in such sad shape (an old football injury *snort*) that when I finally damaged it for the last time, I said, “I give! Uncle!”
I took a header over the handlebars of my bike, trying to brake for Igor, who had cut in front of me to make a right turn, knowing that I was behind him. When the doctor found arterial blood, he scheduled me for surgery two days later. (This was on a Saturday.)
The surgery itself was a breeze. But my body is strange, and instead of my knee having to be drained, it drained itself. I had to change the dressing every day for nearly a week.
However, if your knee is bad enough to put you on crutches, I would strongly recommend that you have an arthroscopy ASAP. You will not realize how bad the knee is until you no longer have to deal with the pain.

I did that once....separated my shoulder. ;-)

I'll see my doctor at the end of next week. He will forward me to the specialist, with an appointment sometime between Feb., and April. She will schedule me for surgery some time between Dec. 2009, and July, 2010.
Socialized health care, coming to a country near you.
