July 20, 1969 was the date of the first manned lunar landing on Apollo 11. Apollo 8 flew December 21-27, 1968. Michael Collins wondered whether or not the command for Apollo 8 to go for Trans Lunar Injection was more historic than his Apollo 11 flight. That command was never given up to that point. After 8 came back, it was just a matter of time (and a bit of luck) until the manned landing would take place.
