What’s “fair” is that each team gets the ball, unlike the majority of current OT’s in the NFL. Three completions = game over. the loser of the coin flip usually loses the game.
Actually statistically it is the other way around.

But football games should be decided by playing football, not by giving the offense the ball on the 25, unearned.
Defense and field position (not to mention the kicking teams) are a huge part of a football game.
