It's a reference to the episode of the show Happy Days where Fonzie, on water skis, jumped over a shark.

It signifies officially going too far or being idiotically over the top.

It relates to taking a thought or concept a little too far.

It started with Happy Days where they kept trying to make the Fonz more cool. They eventually had him being pulled behind a speed boat on skis, wearing his leather coat jumping a tank of sharks.

I think we have reached that point here where there is somehow a difference between vanities on college football and why the site went down because one is important and something people care about and the other is just FreeRepublic.
