I can't believe I've never heard this song but I was probably listening to top-40 in 1980 and this certainly wouldn't be on a playlist. The song is too long for a 3:20 heavy rotation. I fortunately grew up and can appreciate this kind of music now.

That said I read the comments for the video on youtube and saw this in the comments:

She is a member of my generation I am truly proud of. She was raising her children, running a brand new restaurant, writing and performing when she died suddenly from complications from cancer last month. She left behind her 7 year old twins, her 2 grown kids, the reggae community, and the rest of us with an example of someone who made something meaningful and joyous out of life.

Skateaway was one of the first music videos I ever saw ... Great tune, great band.

I don't recall every seeing the video for the song, but I'll have to say the whole album "Making Movies" is probably one of my top 10 or top 20 favorite albums of all time.

I’m old enough to remember when MTV actually showed music videos and the Weather Channel spent most of its time on the weather. But radio? That must have been before my time.

Yes that was a very lovely lady. I’ve had a copy of the video for several years. This video is old enough they had credits at the end, but I assumed Jay Carly was a man’s name.
Plugging it into Google it gave me the African name, and adding this to the search it brought me to the Youtube listing mentioning her death and shortly after to the African obit.
