Dorothy’s Opinion

Mamma has bought a calendar,
And every single page
Has pictures on it of little girls
’Most just about my age.

And when she bought it yesterday,
Down at the big bazaar,
She said, “What lovely little girls,
How true to life they are.”

But I don’t think they’re true to life,
And I’ll just tell you why;
They never have a rumpled frock
Or ribbon bow awry.

And though they play with cats and dogs,
And rabbits and white mice,
And sail their boats and fly their kites,
They always look so nice.

And I am sure no little girl
That ever I have seen,
Could play with dogs or sail a boat
And keep her frock so clean.

Verge

Just on the verge of happening; events I’m pining for,
That “blossoming’ they promised me? I’m waiting at the door.
For flowers to awaken, and spring out from the bud,
Is there some Magic that I need, to quicken in my blood?

And is the timing right for me, before I’ve too much pride,
To reconsider growing up, and dolls I’ve cast aside,
I’m sure they will forgive me, with such a stoic way,
A bit of tea-time with the girls could be a better day.

For I’m no good at this, I fear. I’ll surely do it wrong,
I’ve only gotten this far now, and half the day’s along.
These first times take forever, and I’ve no patience yet,
And any boy who looks at me, a poke is what he’ll get.
