Depends on if you would be able to handle the opposing views without getting too mad. I know when I hear Obama speak I get pretty mad, and usually end up turning him off because I can’t stand it anymore! I would definitly reply and say somthing about “coming our of the closet” but probably not use those words. AND - I would do a reply all if you do. Some folks you send it to are also no-doubt conservatives.

My wife had an issue with this where she volunteers and many folks afterwards spoke to her that “I’m a conservative too and I’m glad you did this..”. It’s easy in “Liberal Land” to know who your political enemies are - but nice to know who your conservative friends are.

On the other hand - you can go to the party and say “Hey, lets play a game that whenever your candidate makes a gaffe you have to take a shot - I brought a few bottles”. Then, near the end of the debate when all your liberal friends are passed out, you and the other few conservatives place a truckload of McCain/Palin signs all over the house and divvy up the remaining snacks and cookies (and your booze - if there’s any left!)

Honestly it’s not worth going. All you are going to do is intentionally put yourself into a situation where you are surrounded by hostile liberals on their home turf.

I agree with this. Unless you really think you can hold your own to more than two arguers (without blowing up), you'll just become their punching bag. Decline politely.

Nice woman? Not when she finds out who you really are! Their hate is all-consuming.

Tell your friend that you really haven’t been paying too much attention to the election, but you read somewhere that there’s a pretty good chance we’ll be watching Palin for the next 16 years so we better start getting used to her...

Oh man! That’s funny that you say that because she actually suggested that too—taking a shot when Sarah says “You can see Russia from my house.”—I was going to write back and say “Or when Biden says “Hoover got on TV in 1929..” haha

“actually, I support the McCain/Palin ticket, and expect she’ll do just fine. Invitation still open?"

In reality, since she is a friend, the above is the best reply. It's the one I would use.

But then, all my friends already know where I stand on the political spectrum.

Yep, start out as an ObamaMama, but change during the debate in favor of Palin. Say things like “You know, that really is a good point.” and “She doesn’t really seem dumb at all.” and “The whole idea of a woman VP, regardless of party, is exciting!”

Thank you for your reply. I know what you are experiencing with the rock climbers ... my husband has a brother with 4 adult children (ages 25-38), and they are all ultra-liberal-thinking vegan PhD's.

We have found that long, in-depth political discussions should be avoided for the sake of family love & enjoyment, but we never shy away from an exchange of basic political philosophy. I always approach the subjects in the form of a query and show interest in their responses, while making my position known.

Of course, my husband and I live a lifestyle that is consistent with what we speak and they are able to see that it works well and that we are just as 'caring' and 'concerned for the environment' as they.

I hope that you decide to attend your friend's invitation, and I'm sure that you will represent conservative values, which is always a positive thing. Try to keep things 'conversational' instead of 'confrontational'. Think about not even disclosing your political leanings beforehand, as it might put up a negative wall of thought right from the start. Be reasonable and logical and let them figure out where you stand.

Just more of my two cents. Thanks again for listening.

Tell her you’d love to come but the sight of Biden makes you gag.

Nothing good will come from this. I have old bandmates that never grew up. I have dramatic differences in opinion, life experience, philosophy, and politics with them. I will occassionally see them socially but leave when politics/religion come up. Similarly, I delete any email from them that has any mention of those topics. By doing so, I can still think of them positively. I won't change their drug and drink addled minds. They won't change mine and its a lot healthier this way.

Her wording was that she wanted to watch Sarah "screw up."

Typical liberal. They shoot off their mouths and it never occurs to them that someone else might have a different opinion and be offended.

first off, thanks for being nice to the newbie :) secondly, i wrote the lady back and politefully declined and subtly hinted that “we would not be rooting for the same person anyway-haha”. she replied and simply said “oops-sorry for the palin comments then...” and then continued to write like nothing had happpened. sort of anti-climactic, aye? haha!!! well atleast i don’t have to go to her damn party and i didn’t have to lie either!

Welcome aboard!

Sounds like you politely, but assertively solved your problem without losing a friend. Kudos for you. And you got a liberal to apologize!!!!! Wow!!! You definitely belong here!
