McCartney resists pressure to scrap Israel concert

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Legendary Beatles star Paul McCartney said he was pressed to cancel his upcoming performance in Israel, but reassured Israeli fans in comments published on Thursday he would go ahead with the planned concert.

"I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think, and I have many friends who support Israel," McCartney said in an interview with Israel's Yedioth Ahronoth.

Pro-Palestinian groups have frequently called on international academics and prominent cultural figures to boycott Israel over its occupation of the West Bank and blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

Jewish groups have condemned cultural and academic boycotts as anti-Semitic.

McCartney will perform hits from his Beatles days and his solo career during a September 25 concert in Tel Aviv as part of a series of shows that has taken McCartney to cities he never visited before.

I would like to see a list of everyone who asked Paul not to perform.

He's a big lib, but did what he could for the US in the aftermath of 911.

I've seen him live in concert twice, and he puts on one hell of a show...

“Another account in Israel’s Haaretz newspaper last month pinned the cancellation of the 1965 Beatles concert on a rift between two concert promoters.”

I wonder. If that was the true story, then how did the government get involved? Now there’s a conspiracy theory for you. Books and documentaries have been written over less.

Ahh, the Age of Innocence...

I saw him perform as part of The Beatles in 1966 and am glad to see that he is going to Israel.

How many can say they've had that experience? (Seeing the greatest rock band of all time live, at their peak).

As a matter of necessity, I've had to divorce politics from music, since I love them both so much.

The Beatles were all libs, but what fabulous music.

I have tickets to see the Eagles in concert this month (I've seen them before), and I know I'm going to have to endure some long-winded pro-Obama speech from Henley.

But I still love his/their music.

Being a McCartney fan is like being married. You spend half your time wanting to stomp him and the other half wondering how you could ever live without him.

Yes, the Beatles weren’t known for their conservatism.

I caught Sir Paul up in Philly last tour, and he was spectacular. Great time had by all.
