A weather lady on FNC said that once the storm hits cat 5 at any point, the surge once it makes landfall could be a cat-5 surge, even if the storm itself is cat-4. I never thought about that before.

All that water being pushed around has to go somewhere. Sadly it looks like it’s going into the Mississippi delta.. again.

I think it depends on where it’s a cat 5 and how quick it weakens as well as how big the storm is. The GOM is like a big bowl though, so once water gets moving it’s gotta run into something before the energy dissipates.
