2008 Olympics begin August 8th through to August 24. Live streaming on CBC begins with the opening ceremonies early am. NBC in prime time in evening.
According to Peter these ceremonies won’t be mentioning recent history....its all ancient focusing on those inventions by China...gunpowder, paper, the compass, and I forget the other one now
my ass we did....I was in SLC in ‘02....a group of athletes were escorted in with a few NYPD/FDNY when the flag was raised....
“Also, they must apologize profusely and repeatedly for wearing those black masks on Tuesday.”
any pictures of this??
That last one was ‘moveable type’. They just highlighted that. Quite impressive.
Try and see if the Austrailian Broadcasting Corporation is streaming video. Right now I am listening on shortwave (9580 kHz) to their radio coverage of the Olympics. Radio Austrailia is coming in pretty good right now. For those with a fast internet connection, look up Australian media. Maybe there is Chinese media streaming it live, too, but I don’t know. Maybe Japanese or South Korean media is streaming it, too. Of course the Australian media is broadcasting in English! Be resourceful and not just focused on American or Canadian media and I bet you will find live video coverage.
I thought that was the tattered flag they had recovered from the WTC rubble? One of the most moving moments ever seen for the opening ceremonies.
Y’know what...you’re right! I was thinking of Los Angeles ‘84. My apologies.
And, as I remember, it was the RCMP who raised it for Canada.
I remember they brought that flag into the stadium, but I don’t think they raised it. Did they?
it was and I agree with you...
but I’ve been to the Olympics four different times (LA ‘84/Calgary ‘88/Atlanta ‘96/ SLC ‘02) and have never seen a soldier take part in opening/closing ceremony...
post links if possible please...
no....I can’t recall the actual raising of the US flag for Salt Lake...as well the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that night was the most moving version I had ever heard too. Ethereal is how I would have described it.
I just noticed something: they had a long shot of the stadium floor, and the Chinese flag was in the foreground. It was standing almost straight out like it was in a strong wind. The way that stadium is designed, that can’t happen....naturally. They’ve got a freakin’ FAN on that thing. Never seen THAT before.
Agreed. Their version of the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ is also awe-inspiring.
I thought all along that was something they would do to try and keep the air moving rather then stagnate smog...
Oh in the old Maple Leaf Gardens for the anthem before a game they did that. Actually that’s a good idea. It always looks lame for the flags to totally limp going straight down in a stadium as I have seen so often in past games.
The little girl flying through the air with the kite was impressive, but not as much as the flying people at the Torino Closing Ceremonies. They used giant blast fans to lift people in the air without the aid of wires. THAT was cool.
I tried Australia and the BBC. The BBC says they have streaming video...but not to American computers. I think the networks have collaberated to keep their own viewers watching their own countrie’s coverage. That is, except for CBC.
Watching it live now on TV. Pretty impressive program. Actually very impressive.
Agreed.
They said these are tai chi practitioners...but I thought tai chi was slow and methodical. These guys looked like they were really doing kung fu.
I thought you were watching on broadcast tv? From your home page you are in Washington state right? Can you access the streaming video on the web there?
