Adrift, becalmed, midst fog and gloom, silent in your heart's dim room,
Lonely fogbound ship is borne on doldrums’ wavelets, lost, forlorn,
Moon above may pierce the cloud, seen through misty sail and shroud,
Creaking deck beneath your feet speaks no comfort, naught save defeat.

But foc's'le watch calls out a hail, behold a light ahead so frail,
Wavering in the silent mists, the helm gives answer, the vessel lists
A new course plotted, a bearing taken, steerage made, no more forsaken,
The fitful light now steady and true, a guide for helmsman's work to do,

Watch the mists part slowly, then the light fades out then flashes again,
Guiding with its message plain for you to find haven once again,
“Light upon the waters for thee, come about and make for me!
Safe harbor and landing are nigh, my heart’s lamp is yours to steer by!”

Open sea behind you now, landfall’s made with soundings low,
Anchor falls, watch is set, and sand beneath your heel’s met,
At the watch-light’s open door, two arms that held you once before
By shoreline’s setting sunlit cove, gather you up in welcomed love.
