I know what you mean. Although I loved most of the Jodi Piccoult books, her writing style is kind of different too, sometimes that can effect your reading experience.

I have never been a Western fan, but found The Virginian by Owen Wister and The Lonesome Gods by Louis L’Amour to be interesting reads. Chaim Potok's book are good also. The Chosen is one popular book of his. As was discussed earlier Connie Willis writes some really good time travel books. My favorite is The Doomsday Book. I read far and wide. lol My favorite religious author is CS Lewis. He covers many a genre. :)
